The City of Valdez Parks & Recreation Department is hiring for Swim Instructors. Under supervision of the Aquatics Coordinator, the Swim Instructor is responsible for developing and implementing aquatic programming, curriculum, and training. Includes supervisory duties.
This is a temporary, non-benefited position, working a minimum 20 hours per week. Work schedule varies and may include weekdays, evenings, weekends and holidays.
Minimum Qualifications:
Position takes place in an indoor aquatic setting where walking surfaces may be wet and/or slippery at times. Incumbents are required to enter the water to instruct patrons. The pool is chlorine based, temperature of water is set at national standards.

Minimum Qualifications:
- Minimum 15 years or older
- Obtain and maintain current certification as a Red Cross Water Safety Instructor or ability to obtain within 30 days of hire.
- Appropriate supervisor/ leadership training certifications. Training provided by PRCS.
- Some experience in an aquatic setting

Duties and Responsibilities:
- Develop and facilitate a variety of aquatic classes, programs, events and activities for the community.
- Design and implement appropriate classes for the swimming level being taught.
- Communicate regularly with participants and their parents to ensure they are aware of progress.
- Assist with daily operations of the aquatics center.
- Safeguard patrons and staff by ensuring compliance with safety standards, policies, and procedures.
- Provide exceptional service to both internal and external customers.
- Handle customer inquiries and participant registration.
- Ensure facility cleanliness standards are maintained and maintenance issues are reported.
- Other duties as assigned by the Aquatics Coordinator.
Knowledge, Skills and Other Characteristics:
- Demonstrates excellent communication skills with staff and patrons, both written and verbal.
- Ability to work effectively with diverse groups.
- Ability to work effectively with children.
- Knowledge of industry best practices, instructor standards, teaching methods and procedures.
- Ability to develop detailed curriculum for swim lessons.
- Be familiar with American Red Cross Learn-to-Swim levels and other Red Cross Water Safety courses and how to use course materials effectively.
- Knowledge and application of swimming and water safety skills.
- Knowledge and application of teaching swimming and water safety skills.
- Understand facility operations, rules, policies, and procedures.
