What are the responsibilities and job description for the Water and Sewer Distribution Operator position at City of Ukiah?
- Tap pipelines and install and repair valves, hydrants, meters, and pipes of all sizes which may or may not be under pressure.
- Measure, cut, thread, and fit pipes.
- Locate leaks and make repairs.
- Install, clean, and repair sewer lines, storm drains, and laterals.
- Clean and rod sewer lines.
- Install forms and pour and finish concrete.
- Operate motorized equipment including backhoe, loader and sewer cleaning equipment.
- Operate trucks and other light power-driven and vibrating hand tools and equipment, including but not limited to jackhammers and whackers.
- Keep tools in clean and safe working condition.
- Maintain water and sewer operational records and charts.
- Take night, weekend, and holiday standby duty on rotational basis with other Department employees.
- May work unsupervised and may supervise others.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Knowledge of:
- Materials, tools, equipment, and methods used in water and sewer system installation and repair.
- Meters, valves, fittings, and taps.
- Operation of a variety of public works power driven equipment.
- Safe work practices.
Ability to:
- Perform a wide variety of skilled tasks in the installation, repair, and cleaning of sewer and water systems.
- Operate motorized equipment including backhoe, loader and sewer cleaning equipment.
- Perform heavy manual labor and lift up to 95 pounds.
- Operate trucks and other light power-driven and vibrating hand tools and equipment, including but not limited to jackhammers and whackers.
- Understand and carry out oral and written directions.
- Tolerate changes in outside temperatures from winter to summer and tolerate dust, pollen, wind, and rain.
- Work in confined areas, such as in manholes.
- Stand for periods of up to four hours at a time.
- Walk on uneven or steep terrain.
- Establish and maintain cooperative relationships with those contacted in the course of work.
- Work various shifts and flexible hours, including nights, weekends, and holidays.
Necessary Special Requirements:
- Possession of a valid Class A California Driver's License with a tanker endorsement. (This position will be subject to the United States Department of Transportation and Federal Highway Administration regulations relating to controlled substance and alcohol use and testing.)
- Ability to obtain a valid State of California D-2 Water Distribution Certificate within 12 months of appointment.
