SUMMARY:  

Performs manual labor of a semi-skilled level. Operates automotive equipment and a variety of hand tools, power tools and equipment in the construction, maintenance and repair of the City's public works infrastructure.

 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:               

•Operates motor vehicles including light vehicles, trucks and small trailers 

•Operates a variety of hand tools to include shovels, rakes, pick axes, etc. 

•Inspects, services and performs minor repairs on equipment as needed. 

•Assists in loading and unloading materials and equipment and cleaning up work areas. 

•Participates in all operations as necessary. 

•Completes all necessary and required forms, work sheets, etc. in a timely and correct manner that will account for time, materials used, work performed and other needful information so that a complete record will be available. 

•Performs related duties as required.

  • The ability to demonstrate proficiency in the operation of equipment required. 
  • The individual exercises initiative, resourcefulness, and experienced judgment in interpreting and applying guidelines as well as developing and recommending solutions to problems that are unique and outside the scope of current written guidelines. 
  • Must possess the ability to meet deadlines. 
  • The individual must exercise a high degree of independent thought and action.

   

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:   

None.

 

EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE: 

High school diploma or acceptable equivalent (i.e. GED).

   

LANGUAGE SKILLS: 

  • Ability to understand and follow oral and/or written instructions.   
  • Ability to communicate in a clear and concise manner to the general public/citizens.     
  • Ability to write routine reports, logs and daily paperwork.

      

REASONING ABILITY: 

  • The ability to apply basic logic or reason in routine and non-routine functions of operation, maintenance and construction work. 
  • The ability to implement and understand work hazards and applicable safety measures needed for the job.   
  • Ability to exercise initiative, resourcefulness, and experienced judgment in interpreting and applying guidelines as well as developing and recommending solutions to prove. 
  • Ability to identify and evaluate machine functions. 
  • Ability to deal with nonverbal symbols.   
  • Ability to deal with abstract and concrete concepts.  

 

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, AND REGISTRATIONS: 

Maintain a valid driver’s license from the State of Mississippi.  

  

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

While performing the duties of this job, the work may involve lifting, pulling, pushing, positioning or through the use of tools exerting up to 100 pounds of force occasionally (6-33% of the work day); and lifting, pulling, pushing, positioning or through the use of tools exerting up to 50 pounds of force frequently (34-66% 0f the work day). 

  • The work may involve overhead work occasionally.
  • The work may involve standing, walking and bending at the waist frequently; and sitting,squatting, kneeling, crawling and climbing ladders or stairs  occasionally. 
  • The work may involve use of the hands for simple grasping, pushing, pulling and fine manipulation of objects, tools (including power tools), controls and equipment frequently, and repetitively occasionally.  
  • Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and the ability to adjust focus.            
  • The employee is regularly required to talk and hear.

  

WORK ENVIRONMENT:

  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee regularly works near moving equipment; occasionally exposed to electrical power sources; regularly exposed to moderate to very loud noises. 
  • The employee may be required to work outside in extreme weather conditions from rain and cold to extreme heat; is exposed to humid/wet conditions, fumes, airborne particles, vibrations, loud noises, and occasionally toxic chemicals.
