The Opportunity

The City of Tumwater is seeking a skilled Maintenance Technician III to serve as a technical subject matter expert on the Streets Crew. This advanced journey-level position plays a critical role in maintaining and improving the City’s streets, sidewalks, rights-of-way, and traffic control infrastructure.

In this role, you will perform complex maintenance and repair work with a high degree of independence, including advanced troubleshooting and coordination of work activities. You will be relied upon to respond to emergency roadway conditions, ensure work is completed safely and efficiently, and uphold quality standards in the field.

As a Maintenance Technician III, you will provide technical guidance and mentorship to Maintenance Technician I and II staff, support team coordination, and help drive safe and effective operations. This is an excellent opportunity for an experienced technician ready to take on increased responsibility, apply advanced skills, and continue growing within the City.

Advanced Street & Right-of-Way Maintenance

  • Independently inspect, diagnose, maintain, and repair complex street and right-of-way infrastructure, including pavement, sidewalks, shoulders, drainage features, and appurtenances.
  • Perform advanced asphalt patching, pothole repair, crack sealing, and concrete repairs.
  • Identify roadway hazards, pavement failures, and drainage-related issues and determine appropriate corrective actions.

Signs, Markings & Traffic Devices

  • Lead installation, repair, and replacement of traffic signs, posts, and hardware in compliance with MUTCD standards.
  • Coordinate pavement marking activities and traffic control device maintenance.
  • Identify, secure, and restore safe conditions related to damaged or missing traffic control devices.

Equipment, Vehicle & Work Zone Leadership

  • Expert operator of city owned street maintenance equipment, including but not limited to:
    • dump truck with and without trailer
    • snow plow, sander, anti-ice equipment including brine making and application equipment
    • loader, backhoe, excavator, compactor, lawn and roadside mowers
    • string / blade trimmer, hedge trimmer, chain saw and hand tools
  • Perform and oversee routine inspections, greasing, fueling, and preventative maintenance of assigned vehicles and equipment.

Winter Operations & Emergency Response

  • Lead snow and ice control operations, including plowing, sanding, and deicing activities.
  • Respond to emergency roadway hazards such as fallen trees, flooding, debris, and traffic incidents.
  • Coordinate after-hours, weekend, and emergency call-out responses.

Traffic Control & Work Zone Safety

  • Design and implement traffic control plans
  • Serve as traffic control lead or flagger as assigned.
  • Setup, maintenance, and removal of traffic control zones in accordance with City standards and MUTCD requirements.

Documentation & Lead Support

  • Ensure accurate and timely completion of work orders, inspection records, and maintenance documentation.
  • Review field documentation for completeness and accuracy and assist with correcting deficiencies.
  • Provide day-to-day technical guidance, mentoring, and on-the-job training to Maintenance Technician I and II staff

Perform other related duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
  • Leads crew in the field when Crew Lead is unavailable
  • Troubleshoots complex issues.
  • Runs projects with little to no supervision
  • Shares institutional knowledge
  • Possesses most/all necessary credentials for service to the assigned team.
  • Acts as alternate contact for their crew for city leadership and/or the public
  • Mentors junior staff on policies and procedures, including (but not limited to):
    1. work orders 
    2. documentation
    3. task performance safety practices and personal protective equipment use.

  • Independently plans and executes complex street maintenance and repair tasks.
  • Performs advanced troubleshooting and determines appropriate corrective actions.
  • Makes field-level decisions related to safety, sequencing of work, and resource utilization.
  • Escalates major safety hazards, traffic concerns, or infrastructure failures to supervisory staff.

Supervision Received / Exercised
  • Received: General supervision from the Field Crew Lead or Transportation Operations Manager.
  • Exercised: Provides lead direction, mentoring, and task coordination for Maintenance Technician I and II staff.

Key Relationships
  • Internal: Street Crew; Stormwater Crew; GIS; Engineering; Fleet; Operations staff.
  • External: Contractors, residents, vendors, utility partners, and partner agencies during coordinated work.

Tools & Technology
  • Chainsaws, trimmers, mowers, and vegetation removal tools
  • Shovel, rakes, other landscape tools
  • Compactor, common asphalt and concrete tools and equipment
  • Brine making equipment

Working Conditions & Physical Demands

Work is performed in a variety of field, operational, or service environments, depending on assignment. Duties may involve exposure to varying weather conditions, noise, traffic, equipment, uneven terrain, and other operational hazards. Work may require prolonged standing or walking, climbing, bending, kneeling, reaching, and heavy lifting, as well as the operation of tools, equipment, or vehicles. Some assignments may involve working in confined or restricted spaces.
