POSITION DESCRIPTION
Division: Electric Status: Classified
GENERAL PURPOSE:
Climbs poles and works from a bucket truck. Operates equipment and becomes familiar with Division procedures dealing with the construction, maintenance and operation of an electric distribution system.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED:
This position is under moderate supervision of the assigned Supervisor, Line Superintendent and/or Joint Utility Director.
SUPERVISION EXERCISED:
Generally none but may exercise supervision over employees in a lower classification.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Climbs poles and works with energized primary voltage not to exceed 7200/12470 volts.
- Removes and replaces wire or materials on simple structures that are energized.
- Operates equipment in a safe, reliable manner.
- Learns how to trace problems or trouble on different circuits
- Becomes proficient at reading work orders, blue prints and diagrams.
- Can determine correct sizes of transformers needed and the fusing required for transformer banks and laterals.
- Maintains various construction/maintenance records.
- Becomes familiar with removing or replacing wires and materials on all structures.
- Becomes proficient at working with rubber gloves, sleeves and using rubber protective equipment.
- Follows all safety rules, regulations, and policies established within the City and the Electric Division.
- Keeps the appearance of the shop and grounds in an orderly manner by general housekeeping.
- Helps maintain vehicles by cleaning, servicing and housekeeping.
- May be required to perform standby or alternate duties.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Education and Experience:
- High school diploma or GED equivalent.
- Two (2) to three (3) years of related experience.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
- Ability to maintain a pleasant working relationship with fellow employees and the general public.
- Ability to become familiar with Division and City rules and regulations.
- Skill in operating listed tools and equipment.
- Knowledge pertaining to the application of basic First Aid including CPR.
- Ability to follow oral and written instructions.
- Ability to communicate in both oral and written English.
- Must possess good hearing and sight (aided or unaided).
Requirements/Certifications/Licenses:
- Valid New Mexico drivers license and ability to obtain a New Mexico Class “B” CDL license within one (1) year of date of hire.
- Must fulfill 1stClass Lineman requirements.
- Must successfully pass the pre-employment drug.
EQUIPMENT, TOOLS AND MATERIALS:
- Equipment and tools typically used: Division vehicles, portable or mobile radio, various hand tools and when needed, appropriate personal protective equipment.
- Materials and products handled: All materials dealing with the construction and maintenance of electric distribution lines or equipment; all chemicals dealing with the maintenance of Division vehicles and the general housekeeping of Division buildings and grounds; aerosol insecticides.

WORK ENVIRONMENT:
- All essential duties are performed outdoors with exposure to natural weather conditions with extremes in temperatures.
- Works closely with other employees.
- Exposure to various fumes, odors, mists or dusts.
- Exposure to moderate noise levels.
- Job hazards or potential job hazards include cuts, bruises, animal or insect bites or strings, sprains, strains, broken bones, exposure to electrical shock and operation of Division vehicles or equipment, falling objects.
- Duties involve walking, standing or kneeling for long periods of time on even, uneven, hard, soft, wet or dry surfaces.
- Duties may involve lifting of objects up to 50 pounds.
Essential duties are normally performed during weekdays, although emergencies may require working all hours of the day or night, including weekends and holidays.

PHYSICAL FUNCTIONS:
The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential function.
- Must be able to lift up to 100 pounds occasionally (i.e. up to one-third of work day), from ground to waist level. Ability to lift up to 50 pounds frequently to constantly (i.e. from one-third up to entire work day), from ground to shoulder level.
- Ability to sit up to four hours at one time, and up to seven and one-half hours total per day.
- Ability to stand and/or walk up to four hours at one time, and up to eight hours total per day.
- Ability to climb in and out of equipment cabs at least six times daily at an estimated height of six to seven feet.
- Ability to crouch, kneel and remain in a prone position for up to 30 minutes at one time.
- Ability to bed at waist and twist/rotate waist if necessary for up to one-third of work day.
- Ability to work with arms extended and bent for up to four hours at one time, and seven and one-half hours total per day.
- Ability to use hands and wrists to screw/unscrew bolts and oil caps, etc., as part of maintenance routine.
- Ability to maintain balance while climbing up and down necessary ladders.
- Ability to push with legs up to 40 pounds of force to operate foot controls for up to four hours at one time, and seven and one-half hours total per day.
- Ability to twist/rotate legs in operating foot controls.
- Ability to use hands and finger to grasp/manipulate levers and steering wheel in a bilaterally coordinated manner.
- Ability to coordinate use of hands and eyes in operation of the equipment.
