PURPOSE: To ensure a successful multi-agency emergency communications operation and administrative processes and procedures related to documenting, maintaining and controlling police records, reports, case files, statistics and other information.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
Receives and coordinates all 911 police, fire, medical and other emergency assistance requests
Relays instruction to radio units for various local, state and federal agencies
Relays ongoing information to assist and protect responding officers including license plate checks, pick-up notices for wanted persons, criminal record checks, preliminary investigation searches via multiple law enforcement resources
Operates computer to maintain continuous record of communications activity, actions and disposition of emergency requests; keeps necessary logs, records and reports including incoming and outgoing calls
Maintains communications equipment and ensure equipment is in proper working condition
Coordinates and provides first level customer service provided to the general public
Oversees and performs records management system administration functions
Performs regular and all other duties as assigned in the communication center
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Education and Experience:
*Graduate from high school diploma or GED and eligible for P.O.S.T. certification AND
1 year of general work experience; OR
*An equivalent combination of education and experience
Must possess and maintain valid driver's license
Must be willing to obtain certification as an Emergency Medical Dispatcher
Must be willing to obtain certification as a Basic Dispatcher
Must successfully complete WLEA Basic Communications and TTY training
Must be willing to work varied shifts including days, nights, weekends and holidays
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Some knowledge of general communication; proper grammar, spelling and punctuation
Strong interpersonal communication skills; telephone etiquette
Ability to operate standard office equipment including computer, fax, copy machine, etc.
Ability to type 50-60 wpm
Ability to effectively multi-task, understand and operate a variety of radio communication equipment
Ability to think clearly and act quickly in emergency situations
Ability to deliver understandable and complex verbal instructions including good hearing, good diction and speak in a clear voice; communicate effectively both verbally and in writing
Ability to maintain strict confidentiality
Ability to develop effective working relationships
Ability to complete a variety of physical activities, not generally involving muscular strain, such as walking, standing, stooping, sitting for long periods, reaching, talking, hearing and seeing. Common eye, hand, and finger dexterity required.
