The City of Torrance is recruiting for a Wireless Technician to be part of the Information Technology Team!


The Department
The Information Technology Department is responsible for the administration of the City's information and communications systems and infrastructure. Services include the planning, procurement, delivery, maintenance and training which support the business functions of City departments through technology. The Information Technology department's responsibilities include computer hardware systems, data and telecomm infrastructure, data management, information security, radio and wireless communications, software and applications, telephone and voice systems. 

The Position

The Wireless Technician performs skilled work in the installation, maintenance, and repair of mobile and stationary radios, public-safety lights and sirens, voice intercoms and recording systems, and other electronic communications equipment. The Wireless Technician works closely with vendors, contractors and other departments during projects, tests PC based equipment, maintains records and files of installation, maintenance, inventory, and repair work performed, and performs related duties as required.

NOTE: There is a 5% premium for possession of an FCC General Radiotelephone Operator License.

Education and Experience
Any combination of education and experience that would have provided the required knowledge and skills is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and skills would be:

Graduation from high school or equivalent is required and four years of experience installing, maintaining and repairing radio and electronic communications equipment is required. Completion of trade or technical school is desirable.

License and/or Certificates
An appropriate valid California driver's license; possession of a Federal Communications Commission license is desirable.  Possession of a NABER or similar certification is also desirable.

Ideal Candidate
Successful candidates will possess the following:
  • Strong ability to efficiently install, maintain, and repair radio and electronic communication equipment with precision and accuracy;
  • In-depth knowledge of programming and reprogramming Motorola radio devices and systems to meet specific operational and user needs;
  • Expertise in diagnosing and troubleshooting faults in radio communication systems, addressing both hardware and software issues to minimize downtime;
  • Ability to locate and identify interruptions and interferences; 
  • Proficiency in interpreting and preparing technical blueprints and schematics for system installation, maintenance, and troubleshooting;
  • Advanced computer skills, with the ability to install, optimize, and manage communication systems while handling service requests effectively;
  • Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written;
  • Strong interpersonal skills, with the ability to establish and maintain professional relationships with supervisors and colleagues in a collaborative environment;
  • Demonstrated ability to work well with cross-functional teams to prioritize and coordinate equipment repairs and installations;
  • Creativity and resourcefulness in approaching technically challenging repairs or installations with innovative solutions;
  • Solid understanding and practical knowledge of voice intercom systems, ensuring smooth integration with broader communication technologies; and
  • Expertise in collaborating with manufacturers, suppliers, and regulatory bodies to resolve technical issues and ensure compliance with industry standards and regulations.

Special Requirements
Performance of the essential duties of this position includes the following physical demands and/or working conditions.
Requires the ability to perform heavier physical tasks such as walking, standing, climbing, lifting and carrying objects of moderate weight (12-50 pounds); and/or the operation of vehicles, office, shop or hand tools in which manipulative skills and hand-eye coordination are important ingredients of safe and/or productive operations. Climbs stepped antenna structures up to 100 feet high using safety harness. Rides high-lift apparatus, uses ladders and works on multi-story buildings. Works in enclosed areas and underground.

Only those candidates who best meet the City and Department's needs will be invited to participate in the examination process, which will consist of the following components: 

 

Written Test: Weighted 60% (Tentatively scheduled on Wednesday, March 11, 2026)

Panel Interview: Weighted 40% (Tentatively scheduled on Tuesday, March 24, 2026)

Department Interviews are tentatively scheduled for the week of April 6, 2026.
