DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES: An employee in this class performs semi-skilled manual tasks supporting the maintenance and operation of parks, recreation facilities, and grounds. Duties involve the use of hand tools, power tools, and light equipment to complete tasks related to construction, grounds upkeep, and facility repair. Employees in this role support the cleanliness, safety, and functionality of public spaces throughout the City of Thomasville. Assignments are generally received from a supervisor who provides oral instructions regarding task priorities and expectations. Independent judgment and initiative are required to complete daily duties effectively and safely.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Operate dump trucks, tractors, and utility vehicles to transport tools, equipment, gravel, and debris.
  • Perform manual labor such as lifting, digging, raking, and shoveling for parks and grounds maintenance.
  • Assist with installation and maintenance of playgrounds, athletic fields, trails, and greenways.
  • Operate pneumatic tools such as jackhammers, air spades, and tampers for opening/closing ditches.
  • Replace light bulbs, repair fences, clean restrooms, and assist with basic carpentry, plumbing, and painting.
  • Mow park areas and remove litter and debris from grounds and facilities.
  • Support preparation and breakdown of special events and recreational programs.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

  • Working knowledge of landscaping and grounds maintenance practices, tools, and equipment.
  • Basic understanding of safe use and routine maintenance of power tools, mowers, blowers, and other small machinery.
  • Ability to follow oral and written instructions and work effectively with minimal supervision.
  • Ability to perform manual labor outdoors in a variety of weather conditions.
  • Ability to work effectively as part of a team and maintain positive working relationships with coworkers and the public.
  • Basic ability to understand and follow City safety procedures and policies.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: Work in this class is classified as heavy. Must be able to perform the basic life support functions of climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, grasping, talking, hearing, and performing repetitive motions. Work may require exerting up to 100 pounds of force occasionally, up to 50 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 20 pounds of force constantly. Visual acuity is required for operating machinery and inspecting facilities. Employee is subject to both indoor and outdoor environmental conditions, including extreme heat and cold, and is exposed to hazards such as moving mechanical parts, fumes, dusts, and potentially loud noise. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.

DESIRABLE TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE: Completion of high school or an equivalent combination of education and experience is preferred. Prior experience in groundskeeping, landscaping, park maintenance, or similar outdoor labor roles is desirable. A valid North Carolina Driver’s License is required to perform assigned duties across multiple sites and operate city vehicles or equipment as needed.
