BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE JOB:  The Librarian provides professional library services to patrons of the Taylor Public Library. This position is responsible for assisting with collection development, reference and reader's advisory services, programming, outreach, technology assistance, and daily library operations. The Librarian promotes literacy, lifelong learning, and community engagement while delivering exceptional customer service in a welcoming and inclusive environment.

 

ORGANIZATIONAL RELATIONSHIPS: 

  • Reports to Library Director. 
  • In the absence of the Library Director, directs library staff. 
  • Has frequent contact with the general public, other city departments, schools, various civic groups, local agencies, and other libraries.

 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES: This is a description of the way this job is currently performed; there is potential for accommodation.

  • Public Services and Reference including providing professional reference and information services to library patrons of all ages; assisting patrons in locating, evaluating, and using print, digital, and online resources; offering reader's advisory service and recommending materials based on patrons interests and needs; assisting patrons with computers, printers, mobile devices, databases, and digital resources; and resolving patron concerns in a professional and customer-focused manner.
  • Collection development and management including assisting in the selection, evaluation, and deselection of library materials; monitoring collection usage and recommending materials to meet community needs; maintaining knowledge of publishing trends, community interests, and professional standards; and assisting with cataloging, processing, and maintenance of library collections as assigned.
  • Programming and Community Engagement including planning, coordinating, and conducting educational, cultural, and recreational programs for children, teens, and adults; supporting literacy initiatives and lifelong learning opportunities; participating in community outreach activities and representing the library at community events; and developing partnerships with schools, community organizations, businesses, and local groups.
  • Technology services including Investigating and promoting new methods and tools for presenting content to patrons; evaluating and implementing new technologies that enhance library services; providing in-person and virtual reference assistance to patrons; assisting patrons in navigating digital resources and technology; offering training and support for Library staff and patrons on the use of technology, including software applications, databases, and digital tools; collaborating with other librarians and IT staff to develop and implement technology-related programs and services; overseeing the management of electronic resources; actively promoting library services and technology resources to the community; troubleshooting and resolving technical issues; and ensuring a smooth experience for users.
  • Operations and administration including assisting with circulation functions and library service desk operations; maintaining accurate records, statistics, and reports; participating in grant writing process; assisting with opening and closing procedures; participating in strategic planning, special projects, and committee work; ensuring compliance with library policies, City policies, and applicable state and Federal laws; and assisting with training and mentoring library staff and volunteers as assigned.
  • Performs such other duties as may be assigned.
Qualifications:

KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES:

Knowledge of:

  • Modern library principles, practices, and procedures
  • Reference services, information literacy, and collection development
  • Library automation systems
  • Internet searching, computer technology
  • HTML editing and composing
  • Reference materials including electronic resources and the application of technology to reference materials
  • MARC formats, AACR2r, Dewey Decimal System and the Library of Congress
  • Cataloging and classification rules and interpretations
  • Word processing, spreadsheets, and databases
  • Public library resources and services, reader’s advisory
  • Basic computer and software maintenance

Ability to:

  • Provide customer service
  • Communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing
  • Plan, organize, and implement library programs
  • Train staff and patrons in the use of technology
  • Use integrated library systems, databases, Microsoft Office applications and emerging technologies
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with patrons, staff, community organizations, and City employees
  • Work independently and exercise sound judgment

ACCEPTABLE EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING:

  • Master's Degree in Library and Information Science (MLIS/MLS) from an American Library Association (ALA) accredited institution; and
  • Two (2) years of professional experience; preferably in a municipal library setting.

 

CERTIFICATES/LICENSES REQUIRED:

  • Texas Library Association and American Library Association membership recommended. 
  • Valid Texas Driver’s License, Class C, required.
