The City of Tallahassee is seeking a Classification & Compensation Specialist to support the administration of classification and compensation programs within the Human Resources Workforce Development (HRWD) Department. This role partners closely with the Class & Compensation Coordinator to support job evaluation, compensation analysis, and the consistent application of classification structures, pay grades, and pay bands.
This position plays a key role in both day-to-day classification and compensation activities and the application of established practices to ensure alignment with organizational needs, internal equity, and market competitiveness. Placement at the Specialist II or Senior level will be based on experience and demonstrated proficiency.
Salary Range: $21.66 to $34.87 hourly, depending on experience and qualifications
What You’ll Do
- Conduct and support classification and compensation actions, including position reviews, reclassifications, promotions, transfers, and new position development
- Perform job analysis and evaluate positions to ensure appropriate classification, FLSA designation, and pay alignment
- Analyze market data and salary trends to support competitive pay practices and internal equity
- Support and maintain pay grades, pay bands, and compensation structures to ensure consistency and alignment
- Partner with departments to assess job design, organizational structure, and compensation-related requests
- Maintain and audit HR system data (e.g., PeopleSoft HCM) to ensure accuracy and compliance with policies, procedures, and regulatory requirements
- Ability to work independently and provide guidance on complex classification and compensation issues

- Understanding of internal equity, FLSA, and compensation analysis practices
- Experience supporting or leading compensation studies, pay plan administration, or classification structures
- Ability to analyze data and provide clear, well-supported recommendations
- Strong attention to detail and ability to manage multiple priorities
- Effective communication and ability to partner with departments across the organization

Minimum Training & Experience
- Bachelor’s degree in human resources, Business Administration, Public Administration, or a related field.
- 2 years of professional experience in one or more human resources functional areas or in an administrative, programmatic, or closely related area; or 4 years of professional experience, including at least 2 years in Human Resources, for consideration at the Senior Specialist level.
- or an equivalent combination of training and experience.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience supporting classification and compensation programs.
- Experience with salary surveys, market pricing tools (e.g., PayScale/MarketPay), or compensation data analysis.
- Familiarity with job evaluation methods and internal equity analysis.
- Experience with HRIS systems (e.g., PeopleSoft or similar).
- Experience in public sector HR.
