Job Description


Summary: To remedy all problems regarding domestic and non-domestic animals within the city of Tahlequah in addition to housing and caring for stray animals as needed. Classification: This is a safety sensitive position as defined by the United States Department of Transportation drug and alcohol testing regulations the Oklahoma Standards for Workplace Drug and Alcohol Testing Act and/or Oklahoma Medical Marijuana laws. As a safety sensitive classification you will be subject to drug and alcohol testing including random testing. Marijuana is one of the substances included in the drug panel screening. Possession of a medical marijuana license will not excuse you from the testing process or the consequences of testing positive for marijuana.


Job Responsibilities



Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

  • Answer citizens' calls regarding animal issues within the city.
  • Patrol the city looking for strays and respond to calls to pick up strays.
  • Set live traps for nuisance animals and remove them from the property.
  • Handle the investigation of all dog bite cases.
  • Maintain the city animal shelter.
  • Keep the shelter clean and provide humane treatment to the animals housedthere.
  • Assist citizens who come to the pound seeking a lost pet.
  • Mediate barking dog situations and refer action to police if necessary.
  • Work with citizen groups trying to place animals in adoptive homes.
  • Maintain close communications with your immediate supervisor and develop that working relationship.
  • Work to improve your skills and develop your abilities in your job.
  • Other tasks and duties may be assigned to the employee by the supervisor in charge and/or city administration that are not included in this job description and may or/may not be in this department.

Education and/or Experience

  • High school diploma; or equivalent; is preferable.
  • Knowledge of department equipment.

Language Skills

  • Ability to communicate effectively with fellow employees; supervisors; and the public.
Polite; yet assertive; in communicating with the public; as needed.

  • The job is considered "Medium Work"; but with the possibility of having to handle heavy weight; i.e. a large dog and/or bags of food.
  • Level Three Visual Acuity.
