Summer Playground Program

Program runs June 15th- August 14th, 2026 (excluding July 4th)

Monday-Friday; 11:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m. 25 hours/week (weather permitting)

Mandatory training will be on June 10th and 11th.

DEFINITION:
Under supervision, performs duties related to recreational programs for children and adults at a variety of sites; and does other work as required.

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS:
This series provides the City with the opportunity to utilize a variety of community members for various recreational programs on a non-permanent basis. Recreation Program Monitor performs a variety of tasks in support of a variety of recreational programs offered by the City. Assignments to this class include performing tasks for the summer playground program.

TYPICAL TASKS:

  • Oversee program participants and ensure their safety.
  • Maintain a clean playground site.
  • Maintain inventory of available playground equipment and ensure equipment is available to participants.
  • Effectively communicate with participants and their families.
  • Collaborate with other playground monitors to plan engaging games and ensure participant safety on-site and on field trips.
  • Maintain accurate records of daily attendance and incidents.
  • Foster an environment where all participants feel included.

KNOWLEDGE & ABILITIES:

  • Effectively deal with stressful and emergency situation
  • Actively motivate program participants
  • Hear and distinguish a variety of sounds such as those of participants in need of assistance in a noisy environment, fire alarms, and approaching vehicles or equipment which might pose a danger.
  • See program participants in need of assistance from near and far distances.
  • Speak loudly in order to warn program participants of impending danger.
  • Exercise authority to carry out the duties of the position.

For some assignments, ability to:

  • Receive cash and make change
  • Administer first aid
  • Perform a variety of tasks requiring physical strength, such as moving boxes which weigh up to 35 pounds, and assisting in moving children; and leading and playing games/sports.

REQUIREMENTS:
Any combination of training and experience which would provide the required knowledges and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain these knowledges and abilities would be:

Recreation Program Monitor: No specific training or experience is required for most positions. However, some positions may require equivalent to High School graduation and previous experience working with the public.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:

Age Requirement: Must be at least 16 years old at the time of application.

Driver's License Requirement: Some positions may require valid driver's license or ability to provide a suitable form of transportation if necessary as approved by the department head.

Background Investigation Requirement: Must pass a background investigation related to working with children prior to hire.

Post Job Offer Requirement: Must pass a pre-employment drug screen prior to hire.

Special Working Conditions: Some positions may involve exposure to variable temperatures and weather conditions; strong and unpleasant odors and fumes; noise from children; allergens such as poison oak, pollen, and bee stings; pool chemical fluctuations which might cause irritation to eyes and skin; and the possibility of administering first aid which may involve exposure to infections which might cause chronic disease or death.
