NATURE OF WORK
This classification involves performing installations, repairs, and maintenance on a basic level for the City’s water distribution and wastewater collection systems. An employee in this position performs heavy manual labor maintenance and routine repair tasks for water mains, sewers, drainage systems, roadway maintenance, and other related work; obtains on-the-job training for more skilled work in assigned areas; loads and unloads materials and equipment from trucks; and operates, cleans, and services related City vehicles. This position also follows applicable codes and safety precautions.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
- Assists in the repair of water mains, force mains, and gravity sewer lines.
- Shovels debris which cannot be removed by motorized equipment; digs and refills ditches; and mixes mortar.
- Assists in the maintenance and repair of meters; installs, removes, and rotates meters; measures and cuts pipe; lays pipe; and assists in making water taps.
- Assists in the flushing of water mains.
- Assists in the cleaning and tele-inspection of gravity sewer lines.
- Carries tools and materials for skilled workers.
- Loads and unloads material and equipment.
- Assists in cleaning, lubricating, and repairing valves
- Operates, cleans, and services trucks and other power equipment
- Participates in the City’s Standby Program, responding to emergency calls on a rotational schedule.
- Observes established safety practices, procedures, and regulations.
- Performs related work as required.
EDUCATION
- Graduation from an accredited high school or possession of a GED equivalency diploma
- Supplemental special courses in installation, maintenance, or repair of water or sewer lines preferred.
EXPERIENCE
- Basic full-time (or equivalent) paid plumbing experience and/or experience installing water, sewer, and reuses lines and maintaining sewer lift stations.
An equivalent combination of training and experience which involved daily customer contact.
NECESSARY SPECIAL QUALIFICATIONS
- Must possess a valid driver’s license with an acceptable driving record.
- Must obtain a valid Florida driver’s license prior to hire.
- Must be willing to work shift work and be available for overtime and emergency callouts
- Must pass pre-employment and random drug testing, as required and monitored by federal, state and local authorities
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
- Must have the use of sensory skills in order to effectively communicate and interact with other employees and the public through personal contact, the use of the telephone and/or other City issued technology devices
- Physical capability to effectively use and operate City assigned vehicles, manual or power tools
- Ability to climb, balance, bend, stoop, squat, kneel, crouch, crawl, reach, push and/or pull, twist and make repetitive hand movements
- Ability to walk, stand and sit for prolonged periods of time
- Ability to work outdoors under varying temperatures, inclement weather and/or other adverse conditions
- Ability to load, carry, lift, push and/or pull objects weighing up to 50 pounds
- Ability to operate a motorized vehicle
- Ability to climb and descend stairways and ship ladders at unusual heights of up to 40 feet
- Ability to hear within normal audio range, with or without correction
- Ability to see in the normal visual range with or without correction. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus
- Ability to withstand exposure to the following conditions without stress: excessive noise, unpleasant odors, chemicals/other environmental substances, blood borne pathogens
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
- Knowledge of water plumbing and piping systems.
- Knowledge of the use and care of picks, shovels, and similar manual tools.
- Knowledge of the occupational hazards of the types of work performed and of necessary precautions.
- Skill in use and care of required tools and equipment.
- Skill in using department software.
- Ability to perform minor repairs and maintenance of equipment.
- Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.
