TEMPORARY ASSISTANT RECREATION COORDINATOR

(Casual/Seasonal)

The City of Sunnyvale Department of Library and Recreation Services is seeking 1-2 Assistant Recreation Coordinators to assist in the Administration, Marketing & Events unit in activity newsletter production, winter/spring activity guide production, Sunset Movie Series (August), State of the City (September) and assist with outreach and marketing assignments.

Under general supervision from a Recreation Coordinator or Recreation Division professional staff, assist in the planning, organizing, implementing and marketing of a recreation program and/or community service; provide technical staff assistance; and perform other duties as assigned.

Hours: Minimum of 480 hours with the ability to work up to 900 hours within a six month period. The selected candidate will work under the supervision on weekdays between the hours of 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. with at least a 30-min unpaid lunch break. In addition, some evening/weekend hours are required for special events, special assignments, programs, classes or activities.

Essential Job Functions

(May include, but are not limited to, the following):

  • Assist in the planning, organizing, implementing, and evaluating of a community service and/or recreation program.
  • Interact with participants, parents, and community members.
  • Oversee the use of facilities, ensuring participants follow established policies and procedures.
  • Prepare community service and recreation publicity related to assigned programs and disseminate approved publicity.
  • Communicate effectively, both orally and in writing; prepare reports, maintain files and records related to the program.
  • Operate a computer using word processing and business software and other office equipment.
  • Determine and implement the appropriate course of action in emergencies and/or stressful situations.
  • Creatively problem-solve; understand and follow written and oral instructions.
  • Establish, maintain, and promote positive and effective working relationships with employees, other agencies, and the public.
  • Demonstrate initiative and exercise good judgment in the performance of duties.
  • Learn the operation, policy and procedures of the Library and Recreation Services Department.
  • Work independently and as a team member; recognize and set priorities and meet deadlines.
  • Make contractual recommendations to supervisors.
  • Respond to requests for information and program complaints.
  • Provide first aid for minor injuries to participants and the public.
  • Assist in the training, supervision and evaluation of assigned contract or casual staff.

If assigned to Aquatics, duties may also include, but are not limited to the following:

  • Responsible for filling gaps in the pool manager, lifeguard, and swim instructor schedule.
  • Maintains pool, equipment, and grounds to meet all necessary program and regulatory standards.
  • Maintain record of aquatics staff certifications and ensure all staff have current certifications.
  • Follow systems, practices, and training related to risk management and safety of participants and staff and follow accident report procedures and policies.

WORKING CONDITIONS

Position requires prolonged sitting, standing, walking, reaching, twisting, turning, kneeling, bending, squatting and stooping in the performance of daily activities. The position also requires grasping, repetitive hand movement and fine coordination in using a computer keyboard. Additionally, the position requires near and far vision in reading reports and work-related documents and using a computer. Acute hearing is required when providing phone and personal customer service. The need to lift, drag and push files, paper, books and documents weighing up to 50 pounds is also required. Some duties require incumbents to work outdoors in various weather conditions.

When assigned to aquatics, work is performed in an outdoor aquatics environment. Must be able to hear noises and distress signals in the aquatic environment, including in the water and anywhere around the zone of responsibility. Remain alert with no lapses of attention. See and observe all sections of an assigned zone or area of responsibility. Ability to sit for long periods at a time is required, and the ability to hold breath under water when necessary.

Minimum Qualifications

The minimum qualifications for education and experience can be met in the following way:

An Associate's degree or have completed 60 semester or 90 quarter units at an accredited college or university with coursework in recreation/leisure, arts administration, hospitality management, human services, public administration, business administration or a related field; AND

One (1) year of experience in recreation programs or other community-based services with some lead or supervisory experience.

For Positions In Aquatics

  • Certifications (must be obtained within 90 days of hire): Lifeguard, CPR for the Professional Rescuer, AED, First Aid, Emergency Oxygen, Blood Borne Pathogens and Title 22.
  • Ability to maintain certification-level of physical and mental readiness.
  • Must demonstrate lifeguard skills in accordance with California standards.

Knowledge Of

  • Recreation, aquatics, arts and community services standards, practices and resources.
  • Common recreational and social needs of various populations and age groups.
  • Principles and practices of program, service and/or facility operations, including the methods and techniques of evaluation and budgeting.
  • Basic mathematics.
  • Office methods, procedures, software, and equipment.
  • Principles of customer service

Ability To

  • Assist in the development and implementation of recreation, aquatics, arts and community services programs, services, and facilities.
  • Assist in recruiting, training, and coordinating the work of casual part-time and volunteer staff and program participants.
  • Learn policies and regulations related to assigned program area.

For Aquatics

  • Swim 300-yards, without stopping, showing proficiency in front crawl and breaststroke.
  • Tread water for 2-minutes without the use of hands.
  • Pass the brick test within 90 seconds. Brick test involves:
  • Swimming 20 yards
  • Diving to the bottom of the deepest part of the pool to retrieve a 10-pound brick
  • Swim on your back with both hands on the brick back to the wall
  • Put the brick on the deck and exit the pool without use of ladder

Willingness To

  • Work irregular hours or shifts, and on nights, weekends, or holidays when needed.

Licenses/Certifications

  • Possession and continued maintenance of a valid class C California driver's license or the ability to provide alternative transportation as approved by the appointing authority and a safe driving record.
  • For positions in Aquatics: Within 6 months of appointment, possession of American Red Cross Lifeguard Manager, American Red Cross Lifeguard Instructor, Water Safety Instructor, and Certified Pool Operator.

Desirable Qualifications

  • Experience in one or more of the following specialty areas: Arts, Customer and Business Services, Special Populations, Seniors and Therapeutics, Sports and Aquatics, and/or Youth and Teen Services.
