POSITION OVERVIEW:
Under limited supervision from the Public Works Director, the Development Technician will be responsible for providing front counter customer service, assist in processing public event permit applications along with providing a broad range of information to the public. Assists the public in processing payments and/or applications at the front counter by greeting customers upon entry, answering telephone inquiries, and directing customers to appropriate staff member to address their concerns.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
Not all functions are performed routinely, but could be required of the position at any time.
- Responsible for the accurate, efficient and timely distribution of information and documents in relation to customer inquiries, special event permits and/or licensing fees.
- Serve as the primary contact for the department, which includes answering phones and directing calls to appropriate staff member while providing quality customer service at the front counter.
- Receive special event permit applications and review for completeness. Coordinate with various City departments to efficiently process application to ensure success of event.
- Maintain files in accordance with records retention policy.
- Supply general information to the public, City staff, and related state and local agencies.
- Work in conjunction with Community & Economic Development staff to process miscellaneous office documents.
- Perform routine clerical tasks such as making copies, drafting documents and receipting.
- Responds to a variety of departmental and public requests for information relative to assigned function; provide requested information or service when authorized.
- Assists in scheduling meetings for the Planning Commission and preparing required documentation; may be called upon to attend meetings and take minutes as required.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
REQUIRED MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Knowledge
- Thorough knowledge of modern communication devices, office equipment and other devices.
- Knowledge of general practices, principles and procedures of municipal government operations and equipment.
- Understanding of excellent customer service and interpersonal communication standards.
- Research and analysis fundamentals using source documentation.
Abilities
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with manager, supervisors, and other City staff.
- Capacity to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing, sufficiently to handle sensitive projects and problems.
- Resolve problems within area of assigned function.
- Ability to communicate detailed information accurately and concisely.
- Operate a personal computer and standard office programs, such as word processors, databases and spreadsheets.
- Work independently from general instructions and broad expectations.
- Ability to perform various tasks while subject to interruption and perform work according to schedules and deadlines.
- Ability to plan and organize various work assignments and maintain excellent attention to detail continuously.
- Attention to detail while working under strict timelines.
- Bi-lingual in English/Spanish required
Education
- High School Diploma or G.E.D.
Experience
- One (1) year of clerical experience, preferably in municipal government, or closely related field
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
The preferred candidate will have the following:
- Associate’s Degree in Business Administration, Planning or related field
- Two (2) years’ clerical experience in municipal government or related field.
