Position Overview
The City of Sunbury is seeking a dependable, hardworking individual to join its Department of Public Works as a Full-Time Public Works Laborer.
This position performs a variety of duties related to maintaining City streets, parks, facilities, signs, vehicles, and equipment. Work includes operating equipment, performing roadway repairs, snow and ice removal, grounds maintenance, tree maintenance, and responding to emergencies as needed.
This is a hands-on position that requires working outdoors in all seasons and weather conditions.
Essential Duties
- Maintain City streets, parks, and public facilities.
- Install and maintain traffic signs and pavement markings.
- Perform pothole repair, road patching, and related roadway maintenance.
- Assist with snow plowing, salting, and winter weather operations.
- Perform mowing, trimming, brush removal, and grounds maintenance.
- Perform tree trimming and related maintenance activities.
- Operate trucks, mowers, loaders, and other Public Works equipment.
- Conduct routine inspection and maintenance of vehicles and equipment.
- Participate in emergency response and after-hours callouts when required.
- Follow all safety procedures and properly use required personal protective equipment.
QualificationsRequired
- High school diploma or GED.
- Valid Pennsylvania driver's license with an acceptable driving record.
- At least three (3) years of experience in public works, construction, landscaping, equipment operation, maintenance, or a related field; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Ability to safely operate hand tools, power tools, and maintenance equipment.
- Ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions.
- Ability to lift up to 50 pounds independently and up to 100 pounds with assistance.
- Ability to climb ladders, work at heights, and safely use fall-protection equipment.
- Ability to obtain Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) Flagger Certification.
- Ability to obtain required herbicide and pesticide certifications when assigned.
Preferred
- Municipal public works experience.
- Heavy Highway Construction experience.
- Equipment maintenance and repair experience.
- Snow and ice control experience.
- Traffic control or roadway work zone experience.
Work Environment
Work is performed both indoors and outdoors and may involve:
- Exposure to heat, cold, rain, snow, and other weather conditions.
- Working around traffic and active work zones.
- Operating heavy equipment and power tools.
- Working from ladders, aerial lifts, and other elevated locations.
- Participation in emergency and winter weather operations.
