Job Overview
This position is responsible for supporting and assisting the Community Development Director, City Manager, Assistant City Manager, and other staff as directed by performing a wide variety of professional, administrative, and technical duties related to Economic and Community Development. The incumbent will work to coordinate, market, and develop business projects as well as assist with data collection, organization, policy, marketing, and other special projects as directed.
Responsibilities
Assists and advises developers, businesses, real estate professionals, property owners, and other stakeholders interested in Economic or Community Development.
· Provides information on available development sites/land/buildings, development requirements, and potential incentives.
· As assigned, will serve as a point of contact for new and expanding businesses.
· As assigned, organizes and facilitates pre-development meetings for Economic and Community Development stakeholders and internal staff as part of the City’s Business Development Team.
Generates, gathers, and updates data related to economic and community development as well as developing and maintaining databases.
· Economic and demographic data for the City of Sturgis and Sturgis regions.
. Listings of area businesses, economic development and business contacts, email/mailing lists, and other similar data.
.Retail, office, and commercial sites, vacant parcels, structures, and other facilities available for business development in the city.
Perform studies, research, surveys, statistical work, and analysis to prepare reports and other output on assigned subjects for staff and management.
· City ordinances, regulations, policies, procedures, codes, standards, etc. related to Economic and Community Development.
· White papers, recommendations, and policy positions on topics related to Economic and Community Development.
· Cost estimates, purchase agreements, and other documents related to public improvements, the purchase or sale of property, demolition of structures, and similar activities.
· Project assessments, incentive calculations, tax impact analysis, and other similar reports.
Identifies, investigates, and helps implement Economic and Community Development related incentives for public improvements and private development/redevelopment projects.
·As assigned, communications with Michigan Economic Development Corporation staff to identify available incentives for projects.
·As assigned, completes proposal process for grants from Federal, State, local, and private sources.
·Completes data collection, reporting, and administration of grants awarded to the City of Sturgis.
Communicates with Economic and Community Development stakeholders, City Boards and Commissions, the Sturgis City Commission, community organizations, business owners, developers, and the public on various topics related to Economic and Community Development.
·Establishes and maintains effective working relationships with high level individuals, both internally and within the community.
·Serves as an advocate for Economic and Community Development, builds and maintains private/public partnerships, and promotes a positive image for the city.
·As assigned, make oral presentations at meetings of stakeholders.
·Prepares written staff reports, emails, memos, letters, and other written correspondence to stakeholders.
·Attends and participates in one-on-one meetings in person and via phone with stakeholders.
Assists in the marketing and promotion of Economic and Community Development to stakeholders.
·As assigned, conducts effective telephone prospecting and one-on-one meetings to identify and encourage business development.
·Assists in formulating and implementing business attraction marketing strategies including development of written and electronic publications, brochures, ads, etc.
·Assists in formulating and implementing marketing strategies for the Community Development Department.
·Develops and maintains content for the City’s website(s), social media accounts, newsletters, and other publications related to Economic and Community Development.
·Completes written applications and presentations assigned for awards and recognitions related to Economic and Community Development.
Responds to public and internal inquiries, provides information, explains policies and procedures, resolves routine complaints, or refers questions to appropriate staff regarding Economic and Community Development-related areas.
Qualifications
·An associate’s degree with major coursework in public or business administration, urban planning or a related field with five years of experience in economic development, community development, or urban planning OR a bachelor’s degree in public administration, Business Administration, Urban Planning, or a related field with relevant experience is preferred.
