TITLE: Assistant Librarian / Children’s Librarian (Route 66 Centennial Project)

DEPARTMENT: Library

REPORT TO: Library Director

FLSA STATUS: Non-Exempt

FUNDING SOURCE: This seasonal, part-time position is funded in part by the Oklahoma Route 66 Revitalization Grant to support the Stroud Public Library’s awarded “Route 66 Family Adventure Hub” project during the 2026 Route 66 Centennial celebration.

JOB OBJECTIVE: Assist library patrons (especially families traveling Route 66) in locating and checking out materials, deliver engaging children’s and family programming, and support the library’s extended hours and Route 66-themed activities to enhance the visitor experience, preserve local history, and promote Oklahoma’s Route 66 heritage.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following (other duties may be assigned):

  • Plan, coordinate, and facilitate Route 66-themed family activities, including the Oklahoma Route 66 Wooden Craft (painting magnets), Route 66 Travel Journal creation, Neon Sign Scavenger Hunt, and related hands-on crafts.
  • Assist with the “Behind the Glow” educational neon sign video presentation and distribute custom Stroud Neon Signs glow sticks to participants.
  • Support oral history interviews with pre-turnpike era Stroud residents and current Route 66 travelers (recordings will be shared with the Oklahoma Historical Society and Oklahoma Route 66 Association).
  • Conduct or assist with monthly toddler story times, family storytelling sessions (including sessions led by local author Marilyn Hudson), and other programming in the basement, lobby, or parking lot.
  • Promote and facilitate enrollment in the Dolly Parton Imagination Library for qualifying families traveling Route 66.
  • Staff the circulation desk as needed, including checking materials in/out, collecting fines/fees, and handling cash transactions.
  • Teach library skills to school children and provide technical assistance on computers to patrons of all ages.
  • Mind the basement level when in use and set up/arrange meeting rooms (moving tables and chairs) for programs and events.
  • Work the library’s extended 2026 hours to accommodate Route 66 travelers.

WORK SCHEDULE (Seasonal – 2026 Centennial Period): The library will operate on the following extended schedule during the grant-funded period:

  • Monday – Friday: 9:00 a.m. – 8:00 p.m.
  • Saturday: 11:00 a.m. – 8:00 p.m.

Applicants must be available for either morning or afternoon shifts (or both) and Saturdays. This is a seasonal/part-time position aligned with the grant-funded extended hours.

QUALIFICATIONS: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily.

  • High School diploma or GED required; some college or library science coursework preferred.
  • Minimum 1 year of library or customer-service experience, with demonstrated ability to work well with children and families.
  • Friendly, helpful attitude and strong customer-service skills.
  • Knowledge of the Dewey Decimal System, Microsoft Office, desktop computers, and basic computer troubleshooting.
  • Ability to read an analog clock, read cursive, and handle cash (making change without a cash register).
  • Enthusiasm for Route 66 history and Oklahoma heritage is highly desirable.
  • Must maintain confidentiality and use discretion with patron information.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS & WORK ENVIRONMENT: (The physical demands and work environment remain the same as in your original draft, with the addition that the employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 35 pounds when setting up program spaces.)
