STILLWATER FIRE DEPARTMENT is seeking highly motivated and committed individuals for the position of paid-on-call firefighter. The Stillwater Fire Department (SFD) is a combination full-time/paid-on-call fire department. SFD provides fire prevention/education training, fire suppression, technical rescue, and EMS first responder services.Paid-on-Call Firefighters serve to promote fire education and prevention throughout the community as well as to provide fire suppression and emergency rescue services as needed.  This position is primarily responsible for the following areas of impact:   
  • Participates in Department’s and duty crew’s work details; makes known to the department’s training division and shift officer any problems at the earliest possible stage.
  • Attends all department training sessions and drills designated as mandatory by the department’s training division.
  • Participates in prevention activities and safety education.
  • Respond to a complex variety of fire, emergency medical, and rescue calls
  • Build strong connection with the community through response, engagement, and education
  • Staff and respond to special event activities throughout the year as needed
POSITION REQUIREMENTS
  • High School Diploma or G.E.D.
  • Must be 18 years of age or older.
  • Must be able to respond within 10 minutes to SFD Fire Station 1 (measured to or from current residency to fire station).
  • Must maintain a valid MN driver’s license (and have excellent driving record).

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • Successful completion of Fire 1 and/or Fire 2 preferred.
  • Hazardous Materials Operations, EMR and EMT training and certification is preferred.

TRAINING AND RESPONSE REQUIREMENTS
  • Must attend Stillwater Fire Department’s training sessions on Tuesday evenings and/or Wednesday mornings. These training sessions typically occur from 6:00pm to 9:00pm or 9:00am to 12:00pm. These trainings will require active participation and evaluation of competency as required. 
  • Successfully pass Firefighter I, Hazardous Materials Operations (HMO), Firefighter II, and EMR (Emergency Medical Response). Classes will be scheduled through Century College as available.  All Stillwater Firefighter recruits must successfully pass the college-level Firefighter I, II, and HMO courses and State certifications, as well as EMR in order to complete probationary period and become a Stillwater Firefighter. 
  • After initial training, must meet all Department training requirements for the duration of firefighter career. These training sessions typically occur from 9:00am – 12:00pm on Wednesdays or 6:00pm to 9:00pm on Tuesdays.
  • After successfully completing required training, the opportunity to work up to a minimum of 108 duty crew shift hours per quarter. 
PHYSICAL DEMANDS & WORKING CONDITIONS
Work involves frequent calls to emergency situations. There is regular exposure to very disagreeable working conditions such as fumes, fi re, smoke, extreme weather conditions including ice, snow, extreme high and low temperatures, humidity, rain, dirt, mud. The work involves exposure to hazardous conditions such as toxic chemicals, slippery conditions, working in traffic areas and adverse road conditions. While at emergency scenes, incumbent may have exposure to injury, trauma, blood-borne pathogens, traffic accidents, and visual and emotional trauma. Incumbent is required to take appropriate safety precautions and wear protective equipment which may include a self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA).

Incumbents must be able to stand, climb ladders, balance, kneel, stoop, crouch, crawl and reach; to walk or run on uneven surfaces; and to drag up to200 pounds for a distance of 50 feet. There is fingering, grasping, feeling, talking, hearing/listening, seeing/observing, occasional lifting, pushing or pulling of up to 100 pounds, frequent lifting, pushing or pulling of up to 50 pounds and regular moving of objects up to 20 - 40 pounds. Moderate attention to detail and deadlines is required in completing reports and paperwork. Working 24 hour shifts may be required, where sleep is frequently disrupted.

All final candidates must successfully complete and pass the pre-employment process before becoming a Probationary Firefighter for the Stillwater Fire Department.
