Join the City of Sterling team as a Seasonal Lifeguard! This is a great opportunity to gain job experience, build leadership and responsibility skills, and help keep your community safe while working in a positive, team-focused environment.

As a lifeguard, you’ll help create a safe and welcoming place where families and community members come to swim, relax, and have fun.


What You’ll Do

Working under the Aquatics Supervisor, you will:

  • Keep watch over swimmers and help enforce pool safety rules

  • Recognize unsafe situations and respond quickly to prevent accidents

  • Help educate patrons about pool safety and facility guidelines

  • Monitor locker rooms, observation areas, and sun deck spaces

  • Assist with cleaning duties including the pool, deck areas, locker rooms, and surrounding spaces

  • Help maintain a clean, safe, and welcoming facility

  • Attend required trainings and practice emergency response skills

  • Follow City safety rules and maintain confidentiality when needed

  • Help with additional aquatics or recreation tasks as assigned

Qualifications

The knowledge, abilities, and physical requirements listed below are necessary to successfully perform the essential duties of this position. Employees must be able to demonstrate the ability to perform these functions, with or without reasonable accommodation, and may use mechanical or adaptive devices when appropriate.

Knowledge Of:

  • Lifeguarding procedures and safety techniques

  • Basic swimming pool operations

Ability To:

  • Communicate clearly, professionally, and respectfully with coworkers, supervisors, and members of the public

  • Use sound judgment and decision-making skills in routine and emergency situations

  • Adapt to changing situations, new procedures, and unexpected challenges

  • Successfully pass all required skills testing to maintain American Red Cross Lifeguard and CPR-PR certifications

  • Represent the Sterling Recreation Center and the City of Sterling in a positive and professional manner

Qualifications:

Education, Experience & Training

Education:

  • No formal education required

  • Applicants must be at least 15 years old

Experience:

  • No previous work experience required

Training & Certifications:

  • Upon hire, employees will receive training in American Red Cross Lifeguarding skills and techniques (or equivalent)

  • CPR-PR certification will be provided

  • Certifications must remain current as a condition of employment


Physical & Skill Requirements

Lifeguarding is an active job that requires strength, focus, and quick reactions. You must be able to:

  • Perform water rescues and remain in good physical condition

  • Lift or move up to 50 pounds when needed

  • Stand, walk, bend, kneel, reach overhead, and climb ladders

  • Use hands and arms for equipment and cleaning tasks

  • Maintain strong awareness and attention to detail

  • Hear and communicate clearly in a busy pool environment

  • Use basic math and problem-solving skills


Work Environment

You’ll work in and around indoor and outdoor aquatic facilities. The environment is active, team-oriented, and focused on safety and customer service.


Schedule Expectations

Seasonal Lifeguards should be available to work flexible hours which may include:

  • Early mornings

  • Evenings

  • Weekends

  • Holidays

  • Special events or projects
