EXAMPLE OF DUTIES
NOTE: Employee may be required to respond to a disaster, either natural or man-made, to serve the citizens of Statesville. Service to the citizens during a disaster may result in the assignment of other duties, which will take precedence over duties described in this job description. Employees may perform other related duties as needed to meet the needs of the organization.Operates vehicles and equipment such as a tractor, dump truck, backhoe, power boom, crawler loader, street sweeper, asphalt roller, road grader, mini excavator, skid steer, etc. Operates vehicles and/or equipment to transport materials, tools, and personnel to job sites.Operates specialized motor equipment for snow removal, street sanding or sweeping, sewer cleaning, and catch basin cleaning.Maintains and repairs streets and alleys including patching potholes and cracks, laying gravel, grading, and sweeping; paints curbs and road markings.Operates a truck to haul/spread materials for road or street construction or maintenance.Operates motor vehicles and equipment with attachments and/or tools (such as chipper, compressor, tamping machine, trencher) to spread salt and sand on icy roads, shore up ditches, install pipes, cut grass, and similar activities. Performs general cleanup work such as removing debris, raking leaves, cutting grass, and collecting litter from public lands and facilities.Mows and trims grass on right of ways and parks; sprays for weeds and fertilizes; plants, trims, and removes trees and shrubs as needed.Digs, spreads, and levels dirt, sand, and gravel using hand and/or power tools and equipment; repairs streets and sidewalks with asphalt and cold-patching materials; builds and repairs with concrete as necessary.Performs physical labor such as loading and unloading trucks, digging ditches, cutting trees and brush, picking roadsides, painting, flushing sewers, cleaning culverts, and raking blacktop.Services and makes minor repairs to equipment.Performs other duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Working knowledge of the practices of operating and servicing trucks and equipment.Working knowledge of the traffic laws and regulations governing equipment operation.Working knowledge of the occupational hazards and safety precautions necessary to the proper operation of equipment.Ability to operate a variety of motorized vehicles, equipment, and tools in this department.Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions, directions, and traffic signals.Ability to perform heavy labor for prolonged periods, often under adverse weather conditions.Ability to make minor repairs and adjustments to equipment.Ability to communicate ideas clearly, concisely, and effectively, both orally and in writing.Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with colleagues, other departments, supervisors, and the general public.Job Related Physical Activity RequirementsThis position involves heavy work requiring the exertion of 100 pounds of force occasionally, up to 50 pounds of force frequently, and up to 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects.
