What are the responsibilities and job description for the Lead Landscape Worker position at CITY OF STARKVILLE?
GENERAL POSITION SUMMARY:
This is lead manual work involving supervision and participation in the installation, maintenance, and renovation of landscape on public properties. Work involves leading a crew of maintenance personnel in performing a variety of landscape projects. Work involves planning, scheduling, assigning personnel, and purchasing materials to accomplish assigned projects.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
- Lead a crew of subordinates in performing landscaping projects; initiates requisitions to obtain supplies, and other services to complete work.
- Train employees; inspects work; execute strong attention to detail; learn and execute proper landscaping techniques.
- Make work assignments; instructs crew in work methods and procedures; lay out work and demonstrates the proper use of material and equipment; perform more difficult tasks relating to the project.
- Responsible for planning, organizing, scheduling, and coordinating crews directly or through contract maintenance involved in grass cutting, curb dressing, street sweeping, and ground maintenance for public properties and special facilities throughout the city including city roadsides.
- Monitor progress; make necessary changes; complete work orders and daily reports on work performed.
- Drive crew to work site and travels to different job sites within the City to maintain lead work over various crews.
- Lead and participate in the operation of various landscape equipment including landscape tractor with front-end loader; performs and schedules preventive maintenance and repairs to equipment such as cleaning and checking the water, grease, oil, and tires.
- Inspect areas for repairs, notes conditions, and schedules repair work in landscape programs; consults with supervisor on scheduling, staff assignments, and purchase of materials.
- Oversee the safety and operation of crews.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
KNOWLEDGE of, SKILLS AND ABILITIES to:
- Practices and procedures followed in maintenance operations.
- Landscaping maintenance, repair, construction, and horticulture projects.
- Perform semi-skilled general maintenance and construction tasks; perform heavy physical labor.
- Skill in customer service and communicating with customers.
- Lead subordinate personnel involved in landscape projects.
- Perform landscape maintenance work and to demonstrate the proper care of tools and materials.
- Understand and follow written and oral instructions.
- Work well within a team environment and independently.
EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE REQUIRED:
- High School Diploma or G.E.D or equivalent combination of education and experience.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- Possession of Commercial Driver's License Class B
- Two (2) years of considerable experience in landscape management work including leading crews in the construction, installation, maintenance of public properties; or any equivalent combination of training and experience that demonstrates the above listed knowledge, skills, and abilities.
LICENSES, CERTIFICATIONS & OTHER REQUIREMENTS:
- Must possess and maintain a valid Driver’s License and acceptable MVR.
CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT:
- Direct deposit and social security card are required.
- A one-year probationary period may be required.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORKING ENVIRONMENT:
Environment: Work is primarily performed outside in and around heavy traffic in sometimes adverse weather conditions. Work exposes the employee to hazards associated with traffic, chemicals, fumes, bees, dust, vibrations from machinery or blasting, and loud noise levels. Protective equipment is required such as gloves, orange vests protective eyewear, work shoes or boots and coveralls. The employee must occasionally travel to other locations using various modes of private and commercial transportation, and verbally communicate to exchange information.
Physical: Work requires the physical ability to perform heavy and sustained lifting and carrying of equipment, materials, and supplies; physical exertion requiring crawling, pushing and pulling; and standing or sitting for extended periods of time. Work also involves walking on uneven terrain; squatting, bending and stooping; and climbing on and off of machinery and lifting of objects weighing up to 75 lbs.
