GENERAL POSITION SUMMARY:

 The City of Starkville has partnered with Project Peace (powered by the Discovery Center) to support families through a spectrum of services such as: workforce training and education. This position is an assignment designed to accommodate a Project Peace Intern in a technical/public administration, or business job function in support of city jobs and to assist with learning on the job skills.

 

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

This is part-time, administrative work requiring clerical knowledge and skill to assist and support the Sanitation and Environmental Services Department.

  • Serves as the first point of contact for visitors, citizens, employees, and leaders of the City of Starkville’s Sanitation and Environmental Services Department.
  • Provides quality customer service ensuring a positive public image compliant with the City of Starkville’s Code of Conduct.
  • Performs as telephone receptionist of inbound and outbound calls to include answering, resolving, transferring/conferencing, and messaging.
  • Performs data entry and word processing tasks for record keeping, retrieval, reporting, and dissemination.
  • Maintains proficient knowledge of social media outlets and uses them to promote services and happenings within the Department.
  • Executes general assignments and special projects to include coordinating and setting up for Departmental meetings, programs, and events.
  • Works collaboratively with members of Keep Starkville Beautiful.
  • Assists with and/or performs other duties as assigned. NOTE: Location of work may vary based on the Department’s needs and at its discretion.

 

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

Knowledge of:

  • Customer Service: Principles and processes for providing customer and personal services including a desire to help customers regardless of their circumstance.
  • Confidentiality: Methods and techniques of the proper handling and precautions for classified, confidential, and sensitive information.
  • English Language: The structure and content of the English language, including the meaning of words, and grammar.
  • Office Systems: Administrative and clerical procedures and systems such as word processing systems and filing and records management systems.
  • Office Software: Current word processing, presentation, spreadsheet, and database programs used by the City; particularly, the Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Industry Software: Computer understanding sufficient to learn database programs and other software, such as, Kronos and Verizon Network Fleet.

 

Skills and Ability to:

  • Pay attention to detail in dealing with numbers, words, and documents.
  • Multi-task by working with multiple software packages simultaneously.
  • Communicate orally and in writing.
  • Establish and maintain positive working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.
  • Care about and incorporate continuous quality improvement principles for work.
  • Maintain knowledge of a variety of social media outlets.
  • Prioritize and organize work.
  • Follow Department and City policies and procedures with or without supervision.

 

EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE REQUIRED:

  • High school diploma from a school accredited by a regional accrediting agency recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or GED certificate issued by the appropriate state agency.

 

LICENSES, CERTIFICATIONS, AND OTHER REQUIREMENTS:

  • Must possess a valid Mississippi Driver’s License and acceptable MVR.

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT: Clear Drug screen and/or background check.

 

Qualifications for a work-based internship through Project PEACE:

  • A Parent (custodial and/or non-custodial)
  • Ages 18-59
  • Out of High School
  • Live within the approved counties (Oktibbeha, Lowndes, Clay, Webster, Noxubee, Choctaw, and Winston)
  • Household income up to 200% poverty guidelines (verification of income required)

  1. Complete the application
  2. Call the Discovery Center at (662) 615-0033 to set up an appointment with the Workforce Staff to meet with a Workforce Engagement Specialist to review employment soft skills necessary for a successful internship.
  3. Complete Project PEACE paperwork and online assessments.
  4. Maintain contact with Project PEACE throughout internship.

WORKING ENVIRONMENT AND PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

Work is performed in an office environment and involves everyday risks or discomforts which require normal safety precautions. Work requires frequent sitting, walking, standing, bending, and carrying items over twenty-five (25) pounds such as boxes, supplies, etc. Physical demand requirements are at levels of those for sedentary work. Must have average levels of eye/hand/foot coordination with or without accommodation.
