Stormwater Utilities Maintenance Apprentice

At entry level, the Apprentice performs semi-skilled field work requiring the application of acquired skills and knowledge in the installation, field maintenance and repair of stormwater removal and drainage collection systems and related construction procedures. Work includes skill in the use of related equipment; knowledge of departmental functions, policies, and procedures; operating in confined spaces with limited lighting (drainage pipes); working in drainage ditches in standing water; and maintaining balance on floating platforms in area waterways and retention ponds. Work of this class is characterized by participation in, and successful completion of the Apprenticeship Training Program designed to improve the employee's knowledge of stormwater removal and drainage collection system maintenance and construction procedures, and to further develop skills in the use of hand and power tools and other specialized equipment. Upon satisfactory completion of the program, the employee becomes a certified pipe layer level and may be eligible for promotion to Technician.

Salary: $20.46 - $29.57 Hourly

To Qualify


Minimum Qualifications.
Applicants must:

  • Possess a valid high school diploma or GED equivalency.
  • Possess a valid State of Florida Class “B” temporary permit at time of application.
  • Obtain a State of Florida Class “B” Commercial Driver License with “N” endorsement within 12 months of appointment to the position.
  • Complete an 8,000-hour on-the-job training program (including classroom training), obtain a journeyman pipe layer certificate, and obtain a FWPCOA Stormwater Level III (C) certificate within 60 months of appointment to the position.
  • Be able to understand and effectively carry out oral and written instructions.
  • Have some computer knowledge.
  • Acknowledge this position is designated as Emergency Critical (EC) and if hired into the position, you must be immediately available to the department before, during, and after a declared emergency and/or disaster.

Desirable Qualifications. Preferred applicants:

  • Have some experience in stormwater and drainage collection, system construction, maintenance or repair.
  • Are able to perform minor arithmetic calculations quickly and accurately.
  • Are able to prepare routine written reports of work activities.
  • Hold a certification as a journeyman pipe layer.
  • Have graduated from the Public Works Academy.
