JOB SUMMARY



This position is responsible for the maintenance and beautification of City parks, recreational fields, and associated facilities. The Parks Maintenance Technician performs a variety of duties related to grounds upkeep, equipment/facilities repair, irrigation, and facility support to ensure safe and well-maintained public spaces for the community.

 

As a municipal organization, the City of St. Marys is an emergency provider of services. Some emergency situations, including weather related emergencies, may necessitate City of St. Marys employees to assist in areas of work which may not be directly related to the employee’s specific job function, but which will be within the physical capabilities, training, and skills of the employee.

 

MAJOR DUTIES

 

  1. Maintains turf, park grounds, and athletic fields, which includes mowing, edging, seeding, fertilizing, and applying herbicides, etc.
  2. Maintains plumbing and irrigation systems at athletic facilities and in parks; repairs or replaces fixtures, sprinkler heads/systems, pipes, and drainage systems; troubleshoots issues.
  3. Inspects, documents, and performs preventive maintenance and repairs on playground equipment, shelters, restrooms, and related facilities.
  4. Assists with the maintenance of flower beds, including weeding, watering, planting, pruning, and trimming trees/bushes.
  5. Performs setup and maintenance of athletic fields and courts.
  6. Supports special events, tournaments, and programs by setting up equipment, lighting, and other facilities.
  7. Responds to after-hours emergencies.
  8. Operates, maintains, and repairs assigned tools and equipment.
  9. Removes litter, debris, and trash from grounds, restrooms, and public areas.

  10. Performs all other duties as assigned.



KNOWLEDGE REQUIRED BY THE POSITION



  1. Knowledge of park grounds and athletic field maintenance practices, and athletic field layouts.
  2. Knowledge of irrigation and plumbing system maintenance principles.
  3. Knowledge of equipment operation, maintenance, and repair.
  4. Knowledge of safety procedures and protective equipment use.
  5. Skill in the use of hand and power tools.
  6. Skill in problem-solving and planning.
  7. Skill in interpersonal relations, teamwork, and interagency collaboration.
  8. Skill in oral and written communication.



SUPERVISORY CONTROLS



The Public Works Supervisor assigns work in terms of general instructions. Work is reviewed for compliance with procedures, accuracy, and the quality of results.

 

GUIDELINES



Guidelines include City and department policies and procedures, safety regulations, and equipment operation manuals. These guidelines are generally clear and specific, but may require some interpretation in application.

 

COMPLEXITY/SCOPE OF WORK



  • The work consists of varied technical and maintenance duties.
  • The purpose of this position is to maintain and beautify City parks and associated recreation facilities. Successful performance results in safe, attractive, and well-maintained community spaces.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS/ WORK ENVIRONMENT



  • The work is typically performed while standing, walking, bending, stooping, climbing, or crouching. Occasionally having to utilize additional equipment like a bucket truck to replace lights or trim trees.
  • The employee frequently lifts light to heavy objects, operates tools and equipment requiring dexterity, and distinguishes between shades of color.
  • Work is performed outdoors in hot, cold, or inclement weather and may involve exposure to dust, dirt, grease, and chemicals. Appropriate protective equipment such as masks, gloves, and goggles is required.

 

SUPERVISORY AND MANAGEMENT RESPONSIBILITY



This position has functional supervision over assigned personnel within an area, department, or unit. Functional supervision typically involves the ability to assign, coordinate, and review quality and quantity of work of other employees.  

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS



  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • One (1) year of experience in grounds, facilities, or parks maintenance preferred.
  • Any equivalent combination of education, experience, and training which provides the knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform the work.
  • Possession of a valid state driver’s license issued for the type of vehicle or equipment operated.
  • Ability to obtain pesticide applicator certification (if required).
  • Level 1 and Level 2 Sports Field Management Association (SFMA) Certification or ability to obtain certification within 6 months.
