Incumbents in this position provide basic emergency patient care, monitor vital signs and transport patients. Duties include: responding to calls for emergency medical care; assisting with victim extrications; assisting paramedics with advanced care procedures; operating ambulance and two-way communications equipment and cleaning and replenishing supplies. Positions require shift, weekend, holiday and mandatory overtime assignments. Essential Functions and Responsibilities:
Provide care and transportation of the sick and injured consistent with the national performance standards of EMTs
Documentation of activities and completion of appropriate forms.
Assist Paramedics with advanced care procedures.
Drive, fuel, inspect, and clean the ambulance and equipment used in pre-hospital care.
Perform other duties as assigned.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Data Utilization: Requires the ability to perform basic level of data analysis including the ability to review, classify, categorize, prioritize and/or reference data, statutes and/or guidelines and/or group, rank, investigate and diagnose. Requires discretion in determining and referencing such to established standards to recognize interactive effects and relationships.
Human Interaction: Requires the ability to provide paraprofessional level medical care, such as splinting fractures, monitoring vital signs, administering CPR and providing general first aid.
Equipment, Machinery, Tools and Materials Use: Requires the ability to operate and perform complex rapid adjustment on equipment, machinery and tools such as ambulance, fire extinguisher, flashlight, heart monitor, blood pressure cuff, glucometer, oxygen tank, ventilation and suction equipment, cervical collar, stretchers, backboard, and/or related materials used in performing essential functions.
Verbal Aptitude: Requires the ability to utilize a variety of advisory data and information such as medical records, insurance forms, ambulance run reports, check off lists, maps, street guides, technical operating manuals, procedures, guidelines and non-routine correspondence.
Mathematical Aptitude: Requires the ability to perform addition, subtraction, multiplication and division; calculate percentages and decimals.
Functional Reasoning: Requires the ability to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral or diagram form. Involves semi-routine standardized work, with some latitude for independent judgment regarding choices of action.
Situational Reasoning: Requires the ability to exercise the judgment, decisiveness and creativity required in critical and/or unexpected situations involving moderate risk to the organization.
Environmental Factors: Tasks may risk exposure to adverse environmental conditions, such as dirt, dust, pollen, odors, wetness, humidity, rain, fumes, temperature and noise extremes, machinery, electric currents, traffic hazards, animals/wildlife, toxic/poisonous agents, potential violence, disease, or pathogenic substances.
Physical Requirements: Requires the ability to lift, push and pull over one hundred (100) pounds to move the sick and injured, and/or extricating accident victims from wreckage.
Requires the ability to stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, bend, twist and climb to provide assistance to the sick and injured, assist in extricating victims and other duties required at emergency medical situations.
Sensory Requirements: Requires the ability to recognize and identify similarities or differences between characteristics of colors, shapes, sounds and odors associated with job-related objects, materials and tasks to evaluate patients’ condition.
Minimum Qualifications:
A high school diploma or General Educational Development (G.E.D.) certificate AND a Missouri EMTEMT-B License (Emergency Medical Technician – Basic).
Licenses: Must possess and maintain all of the following while employed by the City of St. Louis: a Missouri EMT-B License (Emergency Medical Technician – Basic) and a valid driver's license. Applicants who possess a EMT-B License from another state must obtain Missouri license reciprocity prior to appointment. Please note type of licenses, numbers and expiration dates on the Employment Application. Only qualified applicants who provide proof of a valid driver’s license will be considered for this position.
Preferences: Previous experience as an Emergency Medical Technician is highly preferred.

Veterans Preference Points

City Residence Preference Points
City residents who pass an examination for a position in the classified service and do not receive any other preference will receive a five (5) point preference on a scale of 100 points on the exam. An additional one (1) point shall be added to the passing score of City residents who receive any other preference on a scale of 100 points. City residents must have resided in the City for at least one (1) year at the time of filing their application to be eligible for the preference points.
