Responsible for planning, coordinating and implementing all operations and maintenance of Park Department irrigation systems. Responsible for turf management to include, planning, coordinating, and implementing the fertilizing, seeding and pesticide applications for all parks, schools, and terraces throughout the City. Responsible for building, maintaining, and issuing, all Munis work orders for Open Spaces, buildings, greenhouse, and Forestry. Responsible for Intelligov generated tickets for CleanCity, Parks/Facilities and Forestry emergency calls. Responsible for writing specifications for bids on irrigation, pesticides, fertilizing and see for the City’s parks, schools, terraces and golf courses.
Work is performed with considerable independence in accordance with accepted procedures under general direction of the division and department heads, who review work through reports, conferences, and results achieved. No supervision is exercised over other staff.
- Plans, coordinates, installs, and repairs irrigation lines and makes necessary connections. Maintains systems repairs and replaces valves, backflow preventer, gaskets and time clocks, broken line, and sprinkler heads.
- Inspects, coordinates work performed by private contractors in municipal work programs to ensure compliance with established practices and procedures.
- Manages the Munis work order system for irrigation activities.
- Receives, investigates complaints received regarding the maintenance of irrigation systems and alarm systems on a city-wide basis and provides for necessary corrective measures to be taken to resolve complaints.
- Makes regular rounds to irrigated sites ensuring systems are working properly.
- Makes regular rounds of irrigation work installation in progress to inspect operations and ensure accepted work procedures and safety precautions are adhered to. Provides technical assistance with difficult or unusual work situations.
- Recommends and assists in preparing specifications for the purchase of alarm systems and irrigation systems. Directs and supervises training programs for park employees responsible for the operation of irrigation and alarm systems at City parks.
- Plans, coordinates, and implements all fertilizing and pesticide applications and seeding for all parks, park properties, school fields and terraces;
- Represents, as required, the department with private contractors, other departments and government bodies for the purpose of discussing, planning, coordinating, scheduling and implementing various work projects involving fertilizing, pesticide applications and seeding of all parks, park properties, school fields and terraces.
- Builds, issues, maintains and reports all Munis work order departments for the Park.
- Monitors and handles all Intelligov generated tickets for CleanCity, Parks/Facilities and Forestry emergency calls.
- Writes specifications for all bids for irrigation, pesticides, fertilizing and seed for the City’s parks, schools, terraces and golf courses and takes part in awarding of contracts.
- Represents, as required, the department with private contractors, other departments and government bodies for the purpose of discussing, planning, coordinating, scheduling, and implementing various work projects involving park irrigation systems.
- Assists the City Forester in the street tree inventory system (Tree keeper).
- Performs related work as required.
- Thorough knowledge of the procedures, methods, techniques of repair, maintenance, installation and operation of automatic irrigation systems.
- Ability to determine insect and fungus damage on turf.
- Ability to use and create Excel spreadsheets and Microsoft Word.
- Knowledge of Munis and Intelligov computer systems
- Acquire and maintain an active MA Pesticide Applicator’s License.
- Knowledge of what seed to use for each application.
- Working knowledge of legal and engineering principles and practices as applied to work performed/supervised.
- Ability to plan, schedule, supervise, and implement an effective irrigation maintenance program.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with subordinates, supervisors, municipal officials, contractors, and consultants and the general public.
- Ability to express oneself clearly and concisely, orally, and in writing.
- Associate’s degree in turf management.
- Three to five years experience in maintenance and installation of irrigation systems and alarm systems.
