What are the responsibilities and job description for the Police Corporal position at City of Springfield (MO)?
DUTIES: Performs law enforcement activities in general enforcement and investigations to include major crimes and accidents.
SALARY: $2,322.40 - $3,430.40 is the current bi-weekly salary range effective July 14, Collective Bargaining Agreement.
APPLICATION DEADLINE: Candidates must indicate their interest by submitting an on-line City job application by Thursday, May 15, 2025. Candidates must meet the minimum qualifications by the announcement closing date in order to be eligible for testing. Transcripts must be submitted with the application or be in the candidate's personnel file, as maintained by the Department of Human Resources, to verify the education requirements are met.
NOTE: According to Merit rule 10.1(c), no City Employee "shall be deemed eligible for promotional examination whose last service rating was not satisfactory."
SELECTION PROCESS: The selection process will consist of multiple phases. The phases include:
- Written Exam
- Assessment Center
- Past Performance Evaluation
Written Exam:
- Monday, June 30, 2025
- Location and exact time of written test to be announced at a later date.
- Candidates must have a score of 70 or above to proceed to the assessment exercise phase of the selection process.
- Study materials for the written exam will be available Friday, May 16, 2025. (The issuance of study materials is not a guarantee a candidate has met all eligibility requirements. Human Resources will verify and confirm candidate eligibility.
- Candidates will be required to sign a confidentiality agreement at the time they pick-up their study guide from Human Resources.)
- Questions or concerns regarding written exam questions will be accepted after completion of the examination. Written protests must be submitted in writing no later than 5:00 p.m., Tuesday, July 8, 2025.
- All candidates will be notified of any scoring adjustments in writing.
Assessment Exercise:
- Week of July 27, 2025
- Candidates will be scheduled a specific time for the assessment.
- Location will be announced at a later date.
- Assessors, from outside agencies, will be selected by the City.
- Candidates must pass the assessment exercise to make it onto the Eligible List.

Candidates will be provided an Assessment Center Orientation, which will provide Assessment Center information and define the plausible dimensions to be measured during the process. Candidates will receive a notification at a later date regarding the orientation.
Past Performance Evaluation:
The Police Department supervisory staff will conduct a structured review of candidates' past job performance over the candidate's most previous three (3) years of department tenure. Evaluators will include a minimum of two (2) supervisors, typically from the candidate's chain of command. The evaluation instrument will measure dimensions such as: Job Knowledge, Public Relations and Contacts, Written Communication, Oral Communication, Problem-Solving, Initiative, Work Relationships, Decision-Making, Responsibility and Safety. Other items to be evaluated include attendance, sustained Internal Affairs complaints and work performance. Resource documents available to evaluators will include the candidates' files as maintained by the Police Department and Internal Affairs demeanor reports.
SCORING: In accordance with Merit Rule 6.2, final scores will be rounded to the nearest whole number. Weights for final score calculations are as follows:
Assessment Exercise 55%
Past Performance Evaluation 10%
- Requires a minimum of 60 semester hours from an accredited college or university, preferably with an emphasis in Criminal Justice / Criminology;
- At least four (4) consecutive years of service from the time of graduation from the Springfield Police Academy as a Police Officer, of which two (2) years have been in the last five (5) years with the Springfield Police Department.
Licensing/Certification
- Must possess a valid Driver's License and a Missouri POST Class A Certification;
- Must have the ability to maintain a Type III license for operation & testing of breathalyzer equipment.
- If assigned polygraph duties, must complete and maintain specialized schooling and training.
