About the South San Francisco Public Library

The South San Francisco Public Library is a full-service library committed to delivering quality services to a diverse community. Library services are available at three sites, including the Main Library (901 Civic Campus Way), the Grand Avenue Library (306 Walnut Avenue) and the Gene Mullin Community Learning Center (520 Tamarack Lane). Lifelong literacy services are provided by Project Read at the Main Library and the Gene Mullin Community Learning Center (GMCLC). 


The Position

The Literacy Program Manager manages core library literacy services over several program areas that include one-on-one adult tutoring, ESL, Computer and Citizenship instruction and programs, family literacy outreach and activities including our early literacy outreach van, afterschool homework program for a local Title I school, and literacy programs that cross many interest areas such as computer literacy, civic literacy, financial literacy. Library literacy services are based out of the SSF Main Library and the Gene Mullin Community Learning Center and are embedded in general library services, supporting community members in their reading, learning, civic engagement and personal literacy goals.


The ideal Literacy Program Manager candidate is an innovative and dedicated professional with a strong background in adult and family literacy, education, or a closely related field. They are passionate about equitable access to lifelong learning and bring a proven record of developing, managing, and evaluating impactful literacy programs. Possessing experience in literacy or educational services, including two years of supervisory and grant management responsibilities, the ideal candidate demonstrates the leadership and initiative necessary to guide a dynamic and diverse team.


The ideal candidate is deeply knowledgeable about contemporary literacy practices, community engagement strategies, and instructional design, particularly as it relates to adult learners. The candidate has experience coordinating with community-based organizations, public agencies, schools, and volunteers to deliver responsive and inclusive services. They are an effective writer and communicator with the ability to prepare compelling reports, proposals, and presentations. A background in budget oversight, grant writing, and program evaluation is essential, as is a collaborative leadership style that promotes team development and community partnerships.


Technologically adept, the candidate uses digital tools and platforms to enhance program delivery and internal operations. They thrive in a fast-paced, multifaceted environment, are skilled at balancing strategic planning with day-to-day operations, and are committed to advancing the Library’s mission through responsive literacy services. Bilingual skills are desirable but not required.

 

QUALIFICATIONS: 

Experience: Three years of progressively more responsible professional experience in an adult or family literacy or educational setting; two years experience in a supervisory position over primary staff, project supervision and grant administration.

Training: A bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in education, public administration or a related field.

Licenses/Certifications: Possession of an appropriate, valid California driver’s license and a satisfactory driving record, which must be maintained as a condition of employment.
