The City of South Portland is currently seeking a 40 hour a week (four-day workweek) full-time Field Technician for our Public Works Department. This is an opportunity to join a well-run city and play a part in serving our growing and dynamic community.
Position Summary: The Field Technician is responsible for consistently completing professional technical and administrative work in both a field and office environment with limited oversight and excellent customer service. The position oversees a variety of work related to street excavations, utility connections, signal maintenance, and construction activities within the City rights-of-way; reviewing and administering permits; managing records; and coordinating with contractors performing work associated with private development approved by the City, including cost estimation and site inspections. This position is part of the City’s first line of response for the coordination of maintenance and repair of the City’s streets and represents the City on development activities that interface with City streets and utilities. The Field Technician is also responsible for coordinating communication with contractors, addressing issues and complaints, and ensuring compliance with all regulations and development standards.
This position is assigned to the Public Works Department and regularly provides technical and administrative support within the Department as needed. The Field Technician also provides support to other City departments and functions, including the Public Works Department, Planning and Code Enforcement Divisions, Water Resource Protection, City Manager’s office, and other units of City government as needed, as well as local utilities.
The Field Technician regularly exercises independent judgment on technical matters and the position requires familiarity with a variety of excavation, pavement restoration, utility systems installation and operation, and construction best practices related to grading, drainage, sanitary sewer and stormwater installations, utility pole installations, dig safe program, and knowledge of local and state regulations governing construction activities.
Education: High school diploma required. Two (2) years of post-secondary college or technical school are highly preferred.
Experience: Two (2) years of related work experience required. Previous experience as a field technician, inspector, or in a Public Works environment is strongly preferred. Must possess and maintain a valid State of Maine Class C motor vehicle operators’ license and be able and willing to operate a motor vehicle in order to conduct site visits and inspections.

Salary Range: $30.36 – $34.62/hourly ($63,148-$72,009 annually) depending on experience. This position is eligible for annual step increases, and possible annual cost of living increases as approved by the City Council.
