The City of South Daytona is seeking an energetic individual with extensive construction experience for the position of Public Works Director. The ideal candidate is adept at, and comfortable with, building relationships with a variety of organization and community stakeholders, has the ability to think strategically, completes projects as assigned and is skilled in the areas of construction engineering, parks and public works management.

The Public Works Director is a key member of our senior management team. The ideal candidate is a disciplined, results-oriented professional. Under the administrative direction of the City Manager, the Director is responsible for all employees and activities of the Public Works and Parks/Recreation Department. Considerable independent judgment and discretion is required in directing the daily operation of the department.

South Daytona is a community of nearly 13,000 residents located on the picturesque banks of the Halifax River in east Volusia County, Florida. With a palm-lined business corridor, the community is predominately residential with a small-town ambiance and waterway access that epitomizes the Florida lifestyle. Incorporated on June 18, 1951, the City encompasses four square miles, bordered on the south by Port Orange and Daytona Beach to the north. Its compact size and hometown atmosphere promote a friendly and relaxed quality of life.

South Daytona has been a Council/Manager form of government since 1980. The legislative authority is vested in the Mayor and four Council Members elected at large. The City currently has 104 municipal employees with 33 employees under the Public Works Director.

Public Works aims to consistently provide services that meet or exceed the expectations of its residents. The Department’s four divisions are responsible for the design, construction, and maintenance of the City’s infrastructure as follows:

Administration Division – Directs and coordinates the operational activities of the department including development and implementation of the City’s Capital Improvement Program and coordination of services provided by other intergovernmental agencies. In anticipation of severe weather events, the administrative staff executes the City’s Disaster Plan designed to preserve life and property. If a severe weather event should occur, the City’s Debris Management Plan will be executed to assist residents and restore neighborhoods. Provides technical support to the Development Review Committee for infrastructure planning for new projects, as well as remedial efforts for existing developments and properties in accordance with the Engineering and Design Standards of the Land Development Code.
Fleet and Pump Station Maintenance Division – Maintains and services all the City’s fleet of vehicles, equipment and pump stations.
Facilities and Grounds Maintenance Division – Maintainsthe transportation and stormwater management systems throughout the City including asphalt repair, tree trimming and removal, sidewalk repair, sign management, stormwater inlet and pipe maintenance, street sweeping, pond and ditch maintenance, mowing, bridge maintenance, roadside trash collection, landscape installation, building maintenance, and curb repair.
Utilities Division – Maintains the City’s water distribution, sewer collection, and reuse irrigation systems. This includes water line repair, addressing sewer service line backups, reuse irrigation line repair, fire hydrant installation and repair, sewer pump station maintenance, drinking water analysis, and water quality assurance. The City does not operate any treatment facilities as water is purchased from and sewage is transferred to the City of Daytona Beach.

The Public Works Director is also responsible for the upkeep and maintenance of the City's 9 Parks as well as overseeing athletics and multiple events throughout the year.   

QUALIFICATIONS The City is looking for knowledgeable, creative and innovative candidates with excellent communication, leadership, and consensus building skills. Candidates must possess: • Bachelor’s Degree in Public Administration or closely related field • Minimum of three years of progressively responsible public works or construction experience • Supervisory government experience
