Class Title

The Driver/Operator, Heavy Equipment is responsible for driving trucks with a capacity of more than 26,001 pounds to transport workers, materials, tools, vehicles, things and objects. Drives and/or operates heavy equipment.

Duties

1. Drivers and/or cranes, draglines, bulldozers, wreckers, backhoe, slurry machines, grade-alls, graders, pulvi-mixer, concrete mixer, laydown machine, pneumatic road roller, iron wheel roller, sweeper flusher, and/or dump truck (5-18 yards).
2. Drives and operates the equipment to excavate, grade, level, pull, push, lift and dump earth and other things and objects such as trees, stumps, supplies, ashes, trash, garbage and materials.
3. May be assigned to work alone or with laborers.
4. May assist in loading and unloading truck.
5. Conducts pre-trip and post-trip inspections at the start and end of each day.
6. Complies with all risk management and OSHA policies and procedures, before, during and after job.
7. Trains new members on safe work practices.
8. Regularly attends all required safety, job-related, and certification training classes as required.
9. Services (gas, oil, water, clean, grease and etc.) and performs minor maintenance (e.g. fuses, mud flaps, safety) on assigned equipment.
10. Performs other duties as required or assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

Public Works:

1). High School Diploma or GED from an accredited institution.
2). Demonstrated ability to perform tasks.
2). Possess a Commercial Driver's license, type "A".


Physical Requirements:
1. Frequently stand and walk; walk for long distances and on sloped ground and slippery and uneven surfaces;
2. Normal manual dexterity and eye-hand coordination; finger dexterity and arm-hand steadiness to use a variety of hand and power tools and operate equipment; ability to use feet to operate control pedals on equipment; must be able to reach and lift arms above the shoulder;
3. Ability to lift material weighing over 100 lbs. with assistance; ability to bend, stoop, kneel, crawl, and crouch;
4. Corrected hearing and vision to normal range; verbal communication;
5. Ability to wear safety and protective clothing such as hard hats, safety glasses/goggles, ear plugs, respirators, gloves, boots and chemical resistant clothing;
6. Use of heavy power-driven maintenance equipment, such as tracked hydraulic excavator, backhoes, graders, and front end loaders, as well as hand tools, chain saws, grinders, drill presses, and jackhammers.
Work Environment:
1. Work is performed outside in varying temperature, weather, and humidity conditions; 2. Some work is performed alone and in remote locations;
3. Work is performed in an environment with constant noise; exposure to gases, solvents, fumes, dust, grease and oils; exposure to moving equipment, electrical current, biting insects, and poison oak;
4. May be exposed to hazards associated with underground excavations;
5. Work hours may be irregular due to seasonal conditions;
6. Constant contact with staff and the public.

Travel:
Travel will be required locally from location to location to accomplish job assignments and visit job sites.

Physical Requirements:
Position requires moderate to extensive stooping, kneeling, crouching, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, grasping, talking, hearing, seeing and repetitive motions, along with some combination of climbing and balancing. Position requires abilities to consistently lift and/or move up to 25 pounds, 50 pounds frequently and 100 pounds occasionally.
Work Environment: Work is performed outdoors with exposure to noise, dirt, grease, dust, pollen, odors, wetness, fumes, animals, insects, chemicals, treated/untreated sewer, treated/untreated water, inclement weather, and machinery with moving parts requiring use ofprotectivedevices.
