What are the responsibilities and job description for the Assistant City Attorney position at City of Sheboygan?

The City of Sheboygan is seeking a dedicated Assistant City Attorney to support a wide range of municipal legal functions and help advance the City’s commitment to responsive, high-quality public service. This role offers the opportunity to work collaboratively across departments while contributing to the legal stewardship and long-term success of the community.

The City Attorney’s Office performs all legal services for the City, including providing legal advice to City Officials, preparation and review of contracts and other legal documents, prosecution of persons accused of violating City ordinances, and representation of the City and City officials in lawsuits. The City Attorney’s Office does not provide legal advice to members of the public.

This position performs professional legal work at the direction of the City Attorney, including representing the City in legal proceedings, conducting the City's legal business, and performing related work as required.Advisory & Administrative

  • Research and interpret laws, rulings, regulations, and policies for client-constituents.
  • Prepare legal opinions, ordinances, resolutions, contracts, policies, procedures, and other legal documents.
  • Draft and review legal documents.
  • Advise City officials, officers, staff, boards, and commissions on legal matters.
  • Review claims, licensing matters, and other basic municipal law matters at the direction of the City Attorney.

Litigation

  • Prosecute ordinance violations in municipal and circuit court, including but not limited to: traffic, housing, building, and fire code violations.
  • Prosecute and defend actions involving the City of Sheboygan as assigned by the City Attorney.
  • Represent the City in court and before administrative agencies, as assigned y the City Attorney.

Other

  • Assist in the performance of the duties and functions for the City Attorney.
  • Write correspondence and perform general office work on matters pertaining to the City.
  • Admission to the bar in the State of Wisconsin or eligibility for admission upon hire. Maintenance of law license.
  • Minimum of three (3) years of experience practicing law.
  • Possession and maintenance of a valid driver’s license and auto insurance in accordance with state of Wisconsin law required. May require use of personal vehicle while on the job.
  • General knowledge of laws, court procedures, precedents, and government relations.
  • Ability to perform computerized research regarding legal issues.
  • Knowledge of municipal, circuit, and appellate court procedures and rules of evidence.
  • Knowledge of administrative law, practice, and procedure.
  • Ability to analyze, assess, and organize facts, evidence, precedents, and applicable law and effectively present such materials and recommendations verbally and in writing.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively as appropriate.
  • Ability to appropriately maintain sensitive and confidential information.
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Suite products including Outlook, Sharepoint, Calendar, etc.
  • Ability to understand and interpret constitutional provisions, statutes, administrative regulations, and legal precedents.
  • Ability to analyze statutory and case law and provide legal advice based upon such analysis.
  • Ability to perform legal research and draft well-written and clear letters, opinions, briefs, and memoranda.

Primary functions include sufficient physical ability and mobility to work in an office setting, sit and answer phones, and use of computer equipment on a continuous basis.

On a frequent basis, must have the ability to stand, walk, sit, talk, and reach with hands and arms and occasionally lift, bend, stoop and retrieve files and boxes weighing up to 25-30 pounds. Position requires the operation of office equipment and required repetitive hand movement and fine coordination, including use of a computer keyboard. Travel to other locations for meetings, trainings, conferences, and other applicable events is required.
