Salary Range: $63.42 - $77.07 per hour
This is a two year, temporary position that is expected to end on 12/31/2027 with the possibility of an extension.
Anticipated Schedule: Monday through Friday, 8am-5pm with a minimum of 2 days a week in the office at the Central Library.
The schedule is subject to change based on the Library’s current operational need. A pay period is two weeks in length that starts on Wednesday and ends on Tuesday. This classification is part of a bargaining unit represent by AFSCME.

Position Summary
The Seattle Public Library seeks a Systems Engineer to serve as a key technical resource for the Integrated Library System (ILS) replacement project and ongoing portfolio support. This role will focus on technical configuration, troubleshooting, development of integrations, and support for complex server-side scripts in a Microsoft-centric environment. The engineer will ensure seamless integration between the new ILS and SPL’s ecosystem of applications and services, while maintaining security, performance, and reliability.
The Systems Engineer will own a piece of SPL’s technical portfolio, including one major enterprise application, several medium-sized applications, and numerous small integration points. This role involves primary and secondary ownership of systems, with rotation over time to ensure cross-training and comprehensive coverage.
System Configuration & Administration
- Configure and maintain enterprise application environments, including server-side components and application settings.
- Manage operating systems and database environments that support critical business applications.
Integration Development & Support
- Design, develop, and maintain integrations using modern APIs, legacy protocols, and secure authentication methods.
- Implement and troubleshoot interoperability between enterprise systems and external services.
Scripting & Automation
- Develop and maintain scripts for data migration, cleanup, and automation tasks.
- Optimize automation processes for performance and reliability across multiple environments.
Database Management & Reporting
- Perform data migration, transformation, and reporting within enterprise database platforms.
- Support secure and efficient data access for reporting and analytics tools.
Security & Compliance
- Implement and maintain encryption, secure key management, and compliance with industry standards.
- Ensure adherence to organizational cybersecurity and data protection policies.
Testing & Quality Assurance
- Develop and execute test plans for system configurations, integrations, and automation processes.
- Document technical processes and maintain version control for all changes.
- Develop and execute data quality monitoring and remediation processes.
Service Delivery & Support
- Maintain service levels that meet or exceed SLAs.
- Support and resolve incidents impacting service levels.
- Complete planned/proactive maintenance and upgrades.
- Serve as technical lead with vendor(s.)
- Partner with vendors and internal teams to resolve technical issues and implement enhancements.
- Provide technical guidance to project teams and staff during implementation and ongoing support.
- Education: Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or related field (or equivalent experience).
- Experience and Skills:
- 5 years in systems engineering or similar technical role.
- Strong understanding of commercial off-the-shelf enterprise ecosystems, legacy protocols, and integration patterns.
- Proficiency in at least one coding/scripting language
- Ability to manage migrations and maintain secure, reliable environments.
- Advanced troubleshooting and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a fast-paced environment.
- Strong communication skills for technical and non-technical audiences.
Desired Qualifications:
- Experience with SIP2 integrations and modern ILS platforms (e.g. Polaris, Symphony Web, Evergreen).
- Experience with leveraging C# to integration or automate functions within one or more platforms.
- Knowledge of EZProxy, AMH Sorter, and web services architecture.
- Familiarity with authentication systems and API-based integrations.
- Certifications such as ITIL, Microsoft Certified: Azure Administrator, Database Administrator, Developer, or similar are a plus.
