Through the lens of racial equity, the Human Services Department (HSD), connects people with resources and solutions during times of need so we can all live, learn, work, and take part in strong, healthy communities.


HSD is seeking two experienced human services planning supervisors to support Aging and Disability Services (ADS), a division of HSD and designated Area Agency on Aging (AAA) for King County. ADS plans, coordinates, and advocates for a comprehensive service delivery system for older adults, caregivers, and adults with disabilities. These positions are part of the ADS Planning unit which leads community investment processes,?convenes?events and forums, provides division-wide project management, leads the Age Friendly Initiative, and supports two volunteer advisory boards.


The positions report to the ADS Planning Manager and works collaboratively across the division, department, county, state and community.


The planning unit is required to work on site for a minimum of 3 days per week. This position may require in person work more than 3 days per week to meet business needs.

Day-To-Day Responsibilities

  • Supervises planners, providing direction, training and technical assistance; develops team priorities; assigns and reviews work; evaluates performance; and hires staff.
  • Prepares team operation budget and monitors expenditure. Support general budget development and one-time budget spending plans.
  • Supervises planning processes; plans and develops workplan, delegate tasks; develops goals, objectives and performance metrics for planning process.
  • Participates in department and division management and policy decision making.
  • Supervises public involvement activities including public review processes, community engagement, workshops, presentations. Represents HSD/ADS at meetings, interdepartmental committees, city/county/state task forces. 
  • Prepares a variety of written materials, including briefing or issue papers, recommendations, policies and procedures, public presentations and annual reports.
  • May hold relationships with funders and manage all aspects of a grant.

Minimum Qualifications:  


Education: baccalaureate degree in planning, urban design, environmental studies, public administration


Experience: Requires four years of experience in planning and research related to land use, urban economics, human services, environmental issues, conservation; or other work directly related to City planning and development activities; including one year of lead project management experience.


OR: An equivalent combination of education and experience that demonstrates the ability to perform the position duties.


Desired Qualifications: 

  • Two years Supervisor/Manager related experience
  • Experience using data for policy decisions, service delivery, and continuous quality improvement.?
  • Experience developing policies, services, and programs that serve vulnerable populations.?
  • Enjoy leading and working in multi-disciplinary teams.
  • Navigate a political and complex landscape (city, county, state)
  • Ability to manage ambiguity and uncertainty leading with humility
  • Experience working in or with the aging network, programs for older adults, adults with disabilities, and their caregivers.
