Job Responsibilities
As an Engineering Intern within the Materials Lab, you will be on the front lines of construction quality assurance. You will balance active field work at various jobsites with technical lab operations to ensure the integrity of Seattle’s infrastructure materials.
Field Operations & Quality Assurance
- Sampling & Testing: Conduct hands-on sampling and testing of construction materials to ensure they meet project specifications.
- Jobsite Visitation: Travel to various construction jobsites throughout the City of Seattle to perform field inspections and material collection.
- Material Evaluation: Support the Quality Assurance (QA) process for approving and accepting materials used in both horizontal and vertical construction.
- Lab Operations: Assist in the day-to-day operations of the Materials Lab, ensuring equipment and testing environments are maintained
- Materials Acceptance: Perform various materials testing in accordance to ASTM/AASHTO.
- Technical Learning: Develop a practical understanding of how construction projects evolve, requiring the ability to pivot and adapt to non-linear schedules.
Through this role, you will bridge the gap between classroom theory and civil engineering practice. By the conclusion of this term, you will have:
- Developed a comprehensive understanding of both horizontal and vertical construction processes.
- Gained mastery in sampling and testing methods for various construction materials.
- Achieved proficiency in Quality Assurance (QA) processes required for municipal infrastructure acceptance.
Qualifications
- Education: Currently enrolled as an undergraduate Sophomore, Junior, or Senior in a Civil Engineering or Pre-Engineering program.
- Maintain a minimum 2.5 GPA or higher.
- Interests: An engineering student with a strong interest in hands-on work and construction material quality.
- Driver’s License: A valid Driver's License is required, as you must drive to various jobsites around Seattle.
- Schedule: Ability to work 40 hours per week (Monday – Friday, 7:00 am – 3:30 pm) during the summer months (May – September).
- Enrollment: Students are not required to be enrolled during summer sessions but must provide documentation of continued Fall enrollment.
- Current valid driver's license from any state at time of application
- Candidates must obtain a Washington State driver license on or before the date of hire.

- Full salary range for this internship is: $27.36 - $30.79 an hour.
