As a Community Engagement Intern, you will support the Project Delivery & Engineering Branch (PDEB) in bridging the gap between complex utility projects and the diverse communities they serve. Job Responsibilities
As a Community Engagement Intern, you will support the Project Delivery & Engineering Branch (PDEB) in bridging the gap between complex utility projects and the diverse communities they serve. You will help develop the voice of the utility by creating accessible content and fostering meaningful stakeholder relationships.
Outreach & Communication
- Strategy Support: Assist with the development of outreach strategies and detailed stakeholder analysis for various Capital Improvement Projects (CIP).
- Content Creation: Draft public notices, web content, and creative outreach materials to keep the community informed.
- Engagement Activities: Potentially attend community events and participate in project site visits to see utility work in action.
- CRM Maintenance: Audit and update the Customer Relationship Management (CRM) system to ensure accurate stakeholder tracking and data integrity.
- Accessibility: Develop digitally accessible content to ensure information is inclusive for all community members.
- Strategic Alignment: Learn to balance tactical daily delivery with long-term strategic goals while applying a race and social justice lens to all utility communications.
Through this role, you will gain professional experience in a large public-sector environment. By the conclusion of this term, you will have:
- Developed a working understanding of essential community engagement strategies and tactical implementation.
- Gained "hands-on" experience with digitally accessible content and professional CRM management.
- Built proficiency in business writing, editing, and web content development for government stakeholders.
- Experienced working in both office and hybrid environments within a municipal government setting.
- Education: Currently enrolled as a Graduate Student in Communications, Public Administration, Graphic Design, Urban Planning, Landscape Architecture, Marketing, or a related field.
- Graduate students are required to maintain a minimum GPA of 3.0, throughout the duration of the internship.
- Interests: Someone excited about public service and interested in the vital role of utility projects in urban environments.
- Skills: Eager to develop community engagement skills and gain digital technical experience.
- Equity Mindset: A commitment to applying a race and social justice lens to public-sector work.
- Duration: 1 -2 years.
- Hours: During school sessions, work hours are flexible (15–20 hours/week). This internship permits up to 40 hours per week during summer and breaks.
- Location: Seattle Municipal Tower (SMT) and hybrid options.
- Salary: The full salary range for this internship is $27.67 – $27.67 per hour.
