Position Description
The Seattle City Attorney’s Office seeks dedicated, detail-oriented volunteers to support the Criminal Division. Volunteers in this role will provide administrative assistance to the division’s attorneys, advocates, and other office personnel. This position offers an excellent opportunity to gain experience in a professional legal environment, contributing to the office's efficient operation while learning about municipal law, victims' rights, and public service.
The assignment as a student volunteer is geared towards highly motivated and self-reliant individuals who prefer the low-profile, behind-the-scenes role of a legal support in the adjudicatory process.
Please note that in order to avoid any appearance of impropriety or favoritism during the assignment, volunteers are prohibited from working for lawyers, law firms, district attorney's office, public defender's office, or county counsel unless otherwise authorized by the LAW - Human Resources Department or his or her designee in consultation with the extern’s mentor. During the assignment, volunteers are also prohibited from engaging in other outside employment that would conflict with their duties, pose a conflict of interest, or be incompatible with their role in the court.

Currently, we do not have any volunteer openings. This posting will remain accessible, permitting applicants to apply at any time. Once a position becomes available, we will review all existing applications. Ideal candidates should be available for 5-20 hours per week for 3-9 months.

Background Check Requirements – All positions are security sensitive. Applicants are subject to a criminal history investigation, and employment is contingent upon the verification of credentials and/or other information required by the municipal corporation’s procedures, including the completion of the criminal history check in accordance with Seattle’s Fair Chance Employment Ordinance, SMC 14.17. Applicants will be given a chance to explain or correct background information and provide verifiable information on good conduct and rehabilitation.

Job Responsibilities

- Data Entry
- Data Analysis
- Reviewing and summarizing police reports and court documents
- Reviewing and correcting data for statistical purposes
- Conducting quality assurance reviews of data
- Researching best practices
- Other duties or projects related to domestic violence, victims' rights, and resources for victims
Qualifications
Successful candidates must have the following:
- Availability during regular business hours to volunteer in our downtown Seattle office.
- Volunteers may also explore a hybrid schedule in consultation with their supervisor.
- Commitment to 5-20 hours per week (depending on the section) for 3-9 months. Though positions are unpaid and ineligible for employee benefits, volunteers may earn credit to the extent their school allows.
- Excellent writing and legal research skills.
- Strong organizational skills with attention to detail.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to handle multiple tasks and prioritize effectively.
- Strong computer skills, including proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, etc.).
- Ability to maintain confidentiality and handle sensitive information with discretion.
- A proactive, flexible, and team-oriented attitude.
- Previous administrative or office experience is a plus, but not required.
- Interest in municipal law, public service, or a related field is preferred.
