What are the responsibilities and job description for the Kennel Technician position at City of Schertz?
POSITION SUMMARY:
This position’s primary responsibility is for the general care and maintenance of all animals housed at the Schertz Animal Adoption Center, along with the cleaning and care of the facility. Personal interactions will occur with other Animal Services employees, employees of other city departments, citizens, and customers. Service provided is in person and/or by phone contact.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
• All animals that are boarded in the shelter will be promptly cared for and maintained throughout each day and on a frequent basis. This includes feeding, watering, and examining the animals for illness or injury, as well as exercising the animals as time and weather permits.
• Work areas, rooms, cages, kennels, and equipment shall be cleaned and disinfected throughout the facility each day, multiple times each day. (i.e. ensure no cages, kennels or rooms are soiled and odors are not apparent).
• Applying, providing, or assisting in the application of medications to sick or injured animals.
• Employees will bathe, groom, and socialize the animals within the facility.
• Bathing of the animals may include treating for fleas, ticks, or other skin conditions.
• At times, employees will assist in handling animals that are difficult to restrain.
• Employees will be required to wash and dry towels and blankets, empty trash, sweep, mop, spray down runs, sterilize water and food bowls and patrol the shelter for any additional needs deemed necessary.
• Provides assistance to Animal Services Officers when performing vaccinations, microchipping or any other activity requiring assistance.
• Other responsibilities include assisting with adoptions at the adoption center and adoption events at various locations within the community.
• Will assist with taking photos of animals for posting on various social media websites.
• Other duties assigned or as required.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:
One-year experience and training in general kennel or shelter maintenance is preferred.
High school diploma or general education degree (GED) required.
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
• The individual must have the ability to take a teamwork approach to the job by cooperating with others, offering to help others when needed, and considering larger organization or team goals rather than individual concerns. Includes the ability to build a constructive team spirit where team members are committed to the goals and objectives of the team.
• The individual must have the ability to effectively present information in one-on-one and small group situations to customers, clients, and other employees of the organization. In addition, they must be able to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, procedure manuals and the ability to write routine reports.
• The individual must have the ability to calculate figures and amounts such as proportions, percentages, area, and volume. In addition, they must be able to add, subtract, multiply, divide, and apply concepts of basic math. They will need to be able to do this in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.
• The individual must have the ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form. In addition, they must be able to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations and explain records as well as procedures to others as lead worker. This job also requires judgment regarding use of equipment, tools, materials, and the handling of various animals.
CERTIFICATIONS AND LICENSES REQUIRED:
Requires a valid Texas drivers license.
