***SALARY RANGE CURRENTLY UNDER REVIEW.Under the direction of a supervisor, responds to calls for service and conducts investigations involving animals; licenses animals and enforces animal ordinances of the City of Santa Paula; and does other related work as required.
EXAMPLE OF DUTIES
Operates an Animal Services vehicle to patrol City; issues licenses for animals and maintains appropriate records; maintains animal control facilities; conducts investigations and takes enforcement action where appropriate; impounds stray or roaming animals; responds to requests for assistance from citizens. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: Investigates complaints on violations of the Municipal Code pertaining to animals; Impounds and issues citations or takes other enforcement action as appropriate; Pursues, captures and controls aggressive and dangerous animals using safety equipment and special techniques; Responds to injured domestic animal assistance; Maintains record of daily activity and prepare reports as required; Educates the public on animal control issues including licensing rabies requirements, and animal welfare; Prepares cases for administrative hearings and/or court and testifies when necessary; Ensures cleanliness, maintenance, and safe operations of assigned vehicle; Handles animals humanely, properly, and with compassion at all times; Prepares food, feeds, waters and cares for animals; Maintains healthy, safe, sanitary, and clean facilities for all animals housed by the City using cleaning agents, disinfectants and other appropriate tools; Provides information to the public promoting good animal care and responsible pet ownership.Follows established procedures governing safe work practices including, but not limited to, wearing protective equipment when necessary; performs duties in a manner which assures the safety of oneself and others; Maintains equipment in compliance with industry standards. WORKING ENVIRONMENT: Will be required to work in a variety of environments: Indoor - office, customer service and kennel areas (noisy, odorous environment). Outdoor - subject to adverse weather conditions.Responsibilities may include, but are not limited to, subduing resisting animals, chasing fleeing animals, running, walking, crouching or crawling, moving deceased animals and operating assigned equipment and vehicles. Impound animals within the city or county animal shelter by driving a vehicle, requiring sight and manual dexterity; Able to lift in excess of 100 pounds on a frequent basis; ability to lift from ground level to shoulder height stray, injured and dead animals; ability to read and maintain records and prepare reports using a computer. This position requires flexible hours including holidays and weekends and requires the carrying of a pager and/or cellular phone for off-duty call-out services.
