Job Summary

DEFINITION
Provides real-time operational support by monitoring calls for service, reviewing crime data, and relaying critical information to assist officers and enhance public safety. Uses law-enforcement technology and databases to support investigations and identify emerging patterns.

SUPERVISION
Works under the general supervision of a Police Sergeant and/or designee, who outlines work, occasionally reviews work in progress and periodically reviews completed work.

Representative Duties

REPRESENTATIVE DUTIES
Monitors police calls for service and live video feeds in real time, providing relevant information to support officer safety and enhance situational awareness.

Searches law-enforcement databases to gather relevant information for officers, detectives, and command staff.

Provides timely updates over radio or digital communications systems to support officer safety and investigative needs.

Reviews crime reports and police calls for service to identify crime patterns and trends.

Collects, organizes, and disseminates digital evidence, including video footage, images, and automated alerts.

Prepares bulletins to inform Department personnel about persons of interest, vehicles, incidents, and other relevant crime information.

Collaborates with regional crime centers and law-enforcement partners to share relevant information.

Maintains logs, tracking systems, and databases to ensure accuracy and accessibility of crime information.

Participates in department and community events to explain SMART Center functions and capabilities.

Supports detectives by compiling background information and retrieving historical digital evidence.

Stays informed about emerging practices, technology trends, standards procedures related to real-time crime centers in California.

Performs other duties as assigned.

Requirements

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
Knowledge of:
Law-enforcement databases, video management systems, and related law enforcement technology
Contemporary investigative techniques
Legal documentation procedures and requirements
Crime terminology, incident types, and basic principles of criminal behavior
Relevant local, state, and federal laws applicable to law enforcement data
Principles and methods of conducting research
Procedures and requirements for handling and maintaining law-enforcement records and documentation
Methods for gathering, organizing, and interpreting real-time information
Police radio procedures and standard communication practices
Principles of recordkeeping
Report writing techniques
Business English, spelling, punctuation, and grammar
Confidentiality requirements and laws related to law-enforcement data
Principles of maintaining a diverse, equitable, and inclusive environment
Effective customer service techniques

Ability to:
Monitor multiple sources of information simultaneously and identify relevant details
Access, interpret, and relay information from law-enforcement databases and video systems
Exercise sound judgment under pressure
Remain focused and detailed-oriented while monitoring multiple information streams
Maintain accurate logs, records, and digital evidence files
Maintain confidentiality of law-enforcement and personal information
Testify clearly and accurately in court proceedings or related legal hearings
Communicate effectively, both orally and in writing, in fast-paced situations
Follow written and oral instructions
Work independently and collaboratively in a real-time law-enforcement environment
Maintain composure during stressful situations
Prepare clear and concise informational summaries and bulletins
Adapt to changing demands, technology updates, and emergent incidents
Work with persons from diverse social, cultural and economic backgrounds as well as a variety of work styles, personalities and approaches
Establish and maintain effective and cooperative working relationships with City employees and the general public
Provide effective customer service

SKILLS IN:
Using a personal computer and applicable software, including public safety applications, video platforms, and data systems
Analyzing information quickly and applying sound judgment during evolving situations
Multitasking while remaining attentive and detail-oriented

REQUIREMENTS

Minimum Qualifications:
Education: Graduation from high school or the equivalent. An associate degree or 60 semester units at an accredited college or university in criminal justice, public safety, information technology, or a related field may substitute for one year of the required experience.

Experience: Two years of recent, paid work experience in law enforcement support or criminal analysis support. Experience must have included providing customer service.

Licenses and Certificates:
None.

Desirable Qualifications:
Possession of a valid California P.O.S.T. certificate
Experience working for a law enforcement agency.
Investigative/detective experience in law enforcement
Experience using law-enforcement databases, video systems or ALPR technology.
