WHAT WE DO: 
The Santa Maria Police Department strives to protect and serve all those who live, work, and/or visit Santa Maria. This is accomplished by working in cooperation with the community, promoting safety and enforcing the law. The Crime Analyst I/II is a flexibly staffed position that has an Individual Contributor role that provides crime data for decision making. Their role enables the Santa Maria Police Department to use crime data to anticipate community needs and provide high quality and efficient public safety services to residents.

Under general direction of assigned supervisor, collects, analyzes, and presents crime, offender, demographic, and related data used in allocating and deploying police department resources. Supervision is not normally a responsibility of this classification but may act as lead worker for temporarily assigned employees, or special projects.

Crime Analyst II

These duties are a representative example; position assignments may vary depending on the business needs of the department and organization.  This position: 
Crime Analyst I:
  • Collects, analyzes, and presents crime, offender, demographic, and related data used in allocating and deploying police department resources.
  • Develops and generates criminal and investigative reports.
  • Provides/develops effective deployment, prevention and apprehension strategies and programs.
  • Analyzes and Identifies crime patterns; assists in the effective allocation and deployment of police resources in the control of crime activities.
  • Prepares reports that effectively present statistical data; makes oral and written presentations.
  • Attends meetings; proactively contacts law enforcement and other agencies to obtain and provide crime related data; etc.
  • Scope of assigned area will depend on departmental structure and is at the discretion of the department director.
  • Upholds the values of the organization and has strong customer service orientation.
  • Performs other related projects and duties as assigned.
  • Demonstrates regular, reliable and punctual attendance.
Crime Analyst II:
  • In addition to the duties of the Crime Analyst I, the Crime Analyst II may perform;
  • Provisioning and maintenance of the agency’s Records Management System (RMS).
  • Create mapping products for tactical and operational planning using specialized mapping software i.e. Esri’s ArcGis Pro.
  • Preparation of complex SQL report queries to extract data and conduct high-level strategic/investigative/tactical crime analysis. 
  • Utilize specialized software to conduct video surveillance footage enhancements to assist in obtaining further investigative leads.
  • Perform Geofence and/or cell phone data analysis.
  • Complete link charts utilizing a specialized software program i.e. Visio for in-house and trial presentation purposes of complex cases.

  • Crime Analyst I:
    • Ideally, two years working as a crime analyst for a law enforcement agency; and
    • Graduation from an accredited college or university with an associate’s degree or higher in a relevant field is ideal. Use computer and other office equipment effectively; Microsoft Office Suite (or equivalent); proficiency in other computer software; ability to learn new technology.
    • An equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential duties of the job such as those listed above. 
  • Crime Analyst II:
    • Graduation from an accredited college or university with an associate’s degree or higher in a relevant field is ideal. An equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential duties of the job such as those listed above.
    • Employees may be considered for a level II advancement after completion of three years in their current assignment, at the Department Director’s discretion.
    • Demonstrated capability of producing high level/complex crime analysis work products.
    • Advanced level experience in the use of computers, office equipment, and programs such as Microsoft Office Suite, and future technologies as needed.
  • Current technical/professional knowledge of complex principles, methods, standards, and techniques associated with the scope of work of a recognized profession, such as:
    • Effective verbal and interpersonal communication skills.
    • Possess the ability to effectively give presentations to City staff and the public.
