Nature of Work
Performs custodial, janitorial, and general minor building maintenance duties in the care and cleaning of City buildings and facilities; use of proper methods, materials, and equipment in performing assigned duties.
“FIRST CONSIDERATION WILL BE GIVEN TO CURRENT CITY OF LAS CRUCES EMPLOYEES.”
Work is performed in an internal work environment with frequent exposure to industrial cleaning chemicals and building dusts. Noise and vibration of electrical/mechanical equipment occurs frequently. Protective clothing is available and required.
Moderately heavy physical requirements, frequent balancing, bending, stooping, crouching, kneeling, squatting, pushing/pulling, lifting, carrying, and reaching from all levels; carrying up to 25 pounds occasionally; pushing/pulling up to 150 pounds frequently.
Full-time regular position.
Duties and Responsibilities
Six months of experience in janitorial or custodial work. Some experience in operating heavy-duty floor scrubbing and carpet shampooing equipment is desirable. A combination of education, experience, and training may be applied in accordance with City of Las Cruces policy.
Valid class D driver’s license is required. Position requires an acceptable driving record in accordance with City policy.
Knowledge, Skills, And Abilities
Basic knowledge of: Cleaning methods, materials, and equipment essential in the cleaning of buildings; safety procedures, safety regulations; City policies and procedures; use of proper methods, materials, and equipment in performing assigned duties; the operation and care of electric sweepers, wet/dry vacuum cleaners, mop wringers, washing machines, brooms, mops, cleaning fluids, waxes, and other leaning materials, supplies, and equipment.
Skills in: Safely operating various cleaning equipment and efficiently cleaning offices.
Ability to: follow oral and written instructions; prioritizes own work; perform the physical requirements of the position; and establish and maintain effective working relationships with management, coworkers, and representatives from other City departments.

Duties and Responsibilities
- Performs custodial and janitorial duties within assigned City buildings, empties trash cans, dusts and cleans offices, including dusting books, cabinets, shelves, and furniture and otherwise attending to the neatness and sanitation of buildings or equipment;
- Scrubs, strips, mops, buffs, and waxes floors using scrubbing machine; washes windows and shampoos rugs using shampooing machine; uses cleaning fluids, chemicals and protective equipment to clean, sanitize, and deodorize break rooms, restrooms, and offices disinfects and cleans restrooms and showers.
- Sweeps walkways and building entrances; picks up custodial supplies when necessary; assists in moving office furniture and fixtures with proper equipment; completes minor repairs on cleaning equipment; performs general clean-up of grounds; Uses common tools, such as a hammer, screwdriver and/or ladder to make minor repairs.
- Operates power-driven machinery, such as automatic scrubbers, vacuum sweepers, carpet shampoo machines, and buffers.
- May operate a City vehicle to pick up and deliver supplies.
- May perform routine grounds maintenance tasks, and assists in setting up classrooms and/or gym for recreational classes, programs, and/or events
