About Our Public Works Department
Mission Statement
Public Works constructs and maintains the infrastructure of the City to satisfy community needs by providing engineering services, a safe transportation system, effective stormwater management, and public buildings and grounds.
Responsibilities & Services
The Department of Public Works is an accredited agency by the American Public Works Association. Public Works is responsible for street design, construction, and maintenance. It has also partnered with the Missouri Department of Transportation to implement a cooperative computerized traffic signal system to improve Springfield's street capacity.

Qualifications And Requirements
Experience, Education, and Training
- A minimum of three years responsible experience in construction or maintenance craftswork of which at least one year has been at a skilled level in one or more of the following areas: concrete, welding, carpentry, plumbing, electrical, and/or mechanical.
- Experience must be commensurate with craft specialty required for current vacancy.
- Must possess a valid motor vehicle operator's License;
- Must obtain and maintain a valid Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with appropriate class and endorsements within probationary period for all assignments except the Dickerson Park Zoo;
- ATSSA Supervisory Work Zone Certification is desirable for Public Works assignments.
