Under general supervision, the Paralegal performs paralegal work in a professional capacity.
This non-Civil Service recruitment process will fill one immediate vacancy and may be used to fill future vacancies.
The Paralegal will be responsible for assisting with heavy civil litigation, including drafting summaries of discovery responses and medical records, limited legal research, preparing memos, fact investigation, researching and preparing discovery requests and responses, preparing shells for court documents, filing and serving court-documents, and other related duties. General knowledge of Civil Procedure statutes, court rules, and local rules is desired.
Case planning, development, and management; legal research; interviewing clients; fact gathering and retrieving information; drafting and analyzing legal documents; collecting, compiling, and utilizing technical information to make an independent decision and recommendation to the supervising attorney. Familiarity with State, Federal and Appellate rules and procedures. Reviews incoming pleadings and discovery requests and completes calendaring. Assists in compiling and preparing responses to discovery in civil cases. Prepares legal documents. Maintains departmental law library and organizes new materials as they arrive. Searches court records for information on cases and files legal documents in various courts. Assists in compilation of exhibits for legal briefs and composes correspondence. Performs clerical and general administrative support duties. Performs related duties as assigned.
At least one of the following:
(1) A certificate of completion of a paralegal program approved by the American Bar Association.
(2) A certificate of completion of a paralegal program at, or a degree from, a postsecondary institution that requires the successful completion of a minimum of 24 semester, or equivalent, units in law-related courses and that has been accredited by a national or regional accrediting organization.
(3) A baccalaureate degree or an advanced degree in any subject, a minimum of one year of law-related experience under the supervision of an attorney who has been an active member of the State Bar of California for at least the preceding three years or who has practiced in the federal courts of this state for at least the preceding three years.
(4) A high school diploma or general equivalency diploma, a minimum of three years of law-related experience under the supervision of an attorney who has been an active member of the State Bar of California for at least the preceding three years or who has practiced in the federal courts of this state for at least the preceding three years, and a written declaration from this attorney that the person is qualified to perform paralegal tasks. This experience and training shall be completed no later than December 31, 2003.
DESIRABLE KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
Knowledge of: legal proceedings, including court procedures; legal terminology; the preparation of legal documents, such as pleadings, briefs, ordinances and resolutions; the techniques and methods of legal research and investigation, including familiarity with law library references and supplements.
Skill in: the use of computers and related office software systems, such as Microsoft Office Suite products.
Ability to: prioritize assignments to meet deadlines, listen and communicate effectively, do research in the preparation of cases and legal opinions; organize and present information in written and oral form; represent clients before a state or federal administrative agency as permitted by statute, court rule, or administrative rule or regulation; and ability to work cooperatively in groups and demonstrate leadership skills as appropriate.
