What are the responsibilities and job description for the Lifeguard & Swim Instructor position at City of Sanger?

Continuous Recruitment – Eligibility List Establishment

Under general supervision, patrols the deck of the community swimming pool; enforces regulations; prevents accidents and effects rescues; sells snacks and beverages at the concession stand during recreational swimming; and does other work as assigned. Responsible for providing swimming instruction to people of all ages, following the City of Sanger guidelines. Provide excellent customer service in a safe, enjoyable, and positive atmosphere that promotes member safety and satisfaction in accordance with the City of Sanger policies and procedures.MINIMUMQUALIFICATIONS
Any combination of training and experience that would provide the required knowledge, skills, and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the required qualifications would be:

Education: Completion of 10thgrade.
Minimum Age: 16years
Certification: Prior to start of program employee must possess a valid:
  • CPR Certificate
  • First Aid Certificate issued by the American Red Cross or similar agency.
  • American Red Cross Life Guarding Certificate, YMCA Life Guarding Certificate or other nationally recognized lifeguarding certification.

WORK ENVIRONMENT AND PHYSICAL DEMANDS
  • Must remain in the pool area at all times.
  • Must be able to remain alert with no lapses of consciousness in a warm environment with air temperatures of 80 degrees or higher.
  • Perform all physical aspects of the position, including walking, standing, bending, reaching, and lifting up to 50 pounds at a time in a warm pool environment.

EXAMPLE OF DUTIES
Essential job functions may include, but are not limited to the following:
  • Maintains constant surveillance of patrons/students in the facility; acts immediately and appropriately to secure safety of patrons in the event of emergency.
  • Presents professional appearance and attitude at all times and maintains a high standard of customer service.
  • Provides emergency care and treatment as required until the arrival of emergency medical services.
  • Provide swimming instruction to students of various ages and ability levels.
  • Aid swimmers when necessary to ensure a positive learning environment.
  • Attend in-service training sessions and other meetings as required.
  • Assist in the inspection of the facility, equipment and supplies.
  • Assist in the opening and closing of the facility.
  • Be alert for hazardous situations when guarding your area and report violations to the Pool Manager.
  • Ensure that all pool patrons obey the facility rules.
  • Ensure that all activities are conducted in a safe and healthful manner and that any play and work areas are clean and free of all safety hazards.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS
Knowledge of:
  • Effective supervision of youth activities and programs.
  • CPR and emergency medical procedures.
  • Skilled in the application of lifeguarding, surveillance, and rescue techniques.
  • Basic child guidance principles and practices.
  • Leadership techniques.
  • General techniques of the various swim strokes.
  • Effective supervision of youth activities and programs.
  • Oral and written communications skills.
Ability to:
  • Communicate effectively with children and adults.
  • Plan and carryout assigned activities.
  • Demonstrated ability to swim in shallow and deep water, and tread water.
  • Plan and carryout assigned activities.
  • Understand and follow oral and written instructions.
  • Be active, lift and/or carry equipment and supplies.
  • Work in a leadership role with children and adults.
  • Work harmoniously with fellow employees and the public.
  • React calmly and effectively in emergencies.
  • Pass pre-employment physical skills evaluation as stipulated by the department.
