What are the responsibilities and job description for the Construction Inspector- Engineering Department position at City of Sanford, NC?
This position stems from a recent merger by the City of Sanford that will significantly expand our reach and influence in the industry. The Construction Inspector is responsible for providing support and technical assistance to the TriRiver Water and City of Sanford Engineering department with flexibility among our locations including: Sanford, Pittsboro, Siler City, and Chatham County.
The Construction Inspector is responsible for conducting construction inspections to ensure compliance with plans, specifications and standards; responding to public inquiries; maintaining records and files; preparing reports.
- Inspects street and water and sewer construction projects to ensure compliance with plans, specifications and standards. Tests materials during construction; ensures compliance with all policies, rules, standards and regulations; inspects repairs to existing utility systems.
- Receives and responds to inquiries and complaints from citizens regarding construction projects.
- Informs contractor of deviations or errors and advises as to corrective action; assists in resolving problems.
- Locates existing utility lines for contractors.
- Determines area for water cut-off; prepares public service announcements.
- Prepares preliminary as-built drawings.
- Maintains daily inspection log of man-hours and equipment used by contractor, and construction activities performed to document project progress and conditions.
- Maintains inspection records, plans and related documents.
- Ensures that safety practices are being adhered to on job sites.
- Assists other Public Works and TriRiver Water Divisions with water or sewer repairs, water cut-offs, sewer overflows or backups, storm water drain issues, street conditions and sidewalk and curb and gutter maintenance as needed.
- Performs related tasks as required.

Qualifications
We are looking for a detailed individual who possesses comprehensive knowledge in drawing as-builds; comprehensive knowledge in the use of engineering and safety equipment; thorough knowledge of construction practices, techniques, materials and equipment relating to public improvement projects; thorough knowledge of department policies and procedures; thorough knowledge of engineering plans, specifications and drawings; thorough knowledge in reading and interpreting plans, specifications and blueprints and to compare them with various aspects of construction in progress; general knowledge in the use of standard office equipment and associated software; general knowledge in the use of GIS software; ability to detect errors in construction projects; ability to make arithmetic computations; ability to compute rates, ratios and percentages; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with contractors, property owners and associates to effect satisfactory compliance with specifications and standards. Any combination of education and experience equivalent to graduation from high school and moderate experience in construction work.
Special Requirements
Possession of a valid North Carolina driver’s license upon hire. Must obtain North Carolina DOT Flagger and Confined Space certifications within six months of employment. Must meet and maintain all certification, license and training requirements for position.
