What are the responsibilities and job description for the Senior Traffic Engineer position at City of Sandy Springs?
Essential Functions:

- Oversee the multimodal traffic engineering program and customer service to include but not limited to:
- Managing the City’s Intersection Operations and Safety Program;
- Overseeing traffic engineering operational analyses to identify bottlenecks and congested intersections and corridors;
- Assessing traffic safety across all modes;
- Developing the annual traffic safety program to achieve zero fatal and serious injury crashes by 2040;
- Coordinating, communicating and responding to internal and external customers (Elected Officials, City Management, Public Works, Community Development, Communications, Special Events, Citizens) on traffic engineering topics.
- Manage roadway safety studies, intersection improvement projects, and traffic control device upgrade projects.
- Manage the City's Traffic Calming Program to include:
- Applying the approved City Traffic Calming Policy and coordinating with citizens on traffic calming requests;
- Meeting with neighborhoods to discuss traffic calming requests;
- Coordinating with Police, Communications, and GIS Departments to develop traffic calming plans;
- Estimated costs;
- Preparing presentations; and
- Overseeing construction and maintenance of traffic calming devices.
- Review and approve recommended traffic control devices and striping plans.
- Review traffic engineering studies.
- Review and approve special permit applications related to road and lane closures and compliance with pertinent codes and the Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD).
- Oversee, review and approve traffic field investigations including intersection sight distance and stopping sight distance measurements by other engineers or field staff as well as prepare vegetation trimming letters.
- Review and approve temporary traffic control plans for construction projects and film permits.
- Direct procurement of traffic counts and speed studies for traffic calming and traffic studies.
- Develop sketches, concepts and projects to reduce congestion and crashes.
- Conduct before and after studies to determine the effectiveness of countermeasures.
- Prepare signing and marking plans for safe travel by vehicles, pedestrians, and bicyclists.
- Monitors follow-up and responses to citizen complaints, City Management and City Council Member requests; ensures service requests are prioritized based on importance/priority and ensures appropriate follow-up communication.
- Monitors development related to Traffic and Transportation Unit Services’ on-going work activities and special projects; evaluates their impact and implements policy and procedure improvements.
- Oversee and prepare updates to policies on the use and implementation of traffic control devices.
- Prepare an update to citywide List of Roadways for street speed limits every three (3) years and to submit to the Georgia Department of Transportation and Department of Public Safety to support City of Sandy Springs Police radar enforcement permit.
Qualifications:
Minimum Qualifications:
- Bachelor's Degree in Civil Engineering with specialization in transportation/traffic or related field;
- MS in Civil Engineering with a focus on Transportation/Traffic Engineering preferred. (Masters degree is equivalent to two years of experience).
- Seven (7) years of experience; or any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience which provides the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities for this job.
- Project management experience.
- Must pass post offer background check and drug screen.
Specific License or Certification Required:
- Must possess and maintain a valid Georgia driver’s license with a good driving history.
- Professional Engineer's license in Georgia.
