About the Role

To work under the direction of supervisors assigned to a specific firehouse in the control and extinguishment of fires and the protection of life and property.

Core Competencies

Emergency Response and Firefighting Skills

Responds to fire alarms and other emergency calls, selecting and operating hose nozzles to extinguish fires. Positions and climbs ladders, creates openings in buildings for ventilation, and uses various firefighting equipment effectively.

 

Physical Fitness and Stamina

Maintains physical fitness to perform strenuous tasks under pressure and in dangerous conditions.

Participates in drills, demonstrations, and courses to stay in peak physical condition and up-to-date with firefighting techniques.

 

First Aid and Rescue Operations

Responds to emergency calls to render first aid and assists individuals from burning structures. May operate firefighting or other emergency vehicles and perform Fireboat duties when assigned.

 

Maintenance and Operational Readiness

Performs assigned duties in maintaining firefighting apparatus, quarters, buildings, equipment, and grounds. Protects property from water and smoke damage using waterproof salvage covers, smoke ejectors, and deodorants.

 

Communication and Public Education

Conducts fire drills, delivers fire safety education programs, and engages in public service activities.

Communicates effectively with various kinds of people and works with laws and regulations, sometimes written in legal terms.

 

 

Essential Responsibilities

  •         Responds to fire alarms and other emergency calls. 
  •          Selects hose nozzle, depending on type of fire and directs stream of water or chemicals onto the fire. 
  •          Positions and climbs ladders to gain access to upper levels of buildings or to assist individuals from burning structures.
  •          Participates in drills, demonstrations and courses in hydraulics, pump operation and maintenance and firefighting techniques.
  •          Creates openings in building for ventilation or entrance using axe, chisel, crowbar, ventilation saw and other power equipment.
  •          Respond to emergency calls to render first aid.
  •          May be assigned to Fireboat duties.
  •         Performs assigned duties in maintaining apparatus, quarters, buildings, equipment and grounds.
  •          Protects property from water and smoke by use of waterproof salvage covers, smoke ejectors and deodorants.
  •          May drive and operate firefighting or other emergency vehicles.
  •     May conduct fire drills for occupants of building or deliver a fire safety education program to a target audience, especially children, which may include the wearing of a costume or role playing in a fire safety presentation.  Or may deliver a public service as directed by a supervising officer.
  •          Works with laws and regulations, sometimes written in legal terms.
  •          Work under pressure or in the face of danger.
  •          Deals with various kinds of people.
  •          Keep physically fit
  •         Use firefighting equipment and other safety devices.
  •          Responsible to self-initiate activities consistent with the City of Sandusky’s and department’s goals and objectives.
  •          The avoidance of violent behavior that threatens the safety of other employees.
  •          Performs other specific job-related duties as directed.

 

Physical Demands

·         Very Heavy Work: Exerting in excess of 100 pounds of force occasionally (Activity or condition exists up to 1/3 of the time), and/or in excess of 50 pounds of force frequently (Activity or condition exists from 1/3 to 2/3 of the time), and/or in excess of 20 pounds of force constantly (Activity or condition exists 2/3 of the time or more) to move objects.

 

Environmental Conditions

·         Both: Inside and outside.  A job is considered "both" if the activities occur inside or outside in approximately equal amounts. Extremes of Heat: Temperature sufficiently high to cause marked bodily discomfort unless the worker is provided with exceptional protection. Temperature Changes: Variations in temperature, which are sufficiently marked and abrupt to cause noticeable bodily reactions. Wet:  Contact with water or other liquids. Humid:  Atmospheric condition with moisture content sufficiently high to cause marked bodily discomfort. Noise:  Sufficient noise, either constant or intermittent, to cause marked distraction or possible injury to the sense of hearing and/or sufficient vibration (production of an oscillating movement or strain on the body or its extremities from repeated motion or shock) to cause bodily harm if endured day after day. Hazards:  Situations in which the individual is exposed to the definite risk of bodily injury. Exposure to: Odors, toxic conditions, dust or poor ventilation.
