The Code Compliance Officer enforces municipal codes to protect public health, safety, and community standards. This position investigates complaints, conducts inspections, issues enforcement notices, and educates the public on compliance requirements. - Inspect properties, buildings, and establishments for compliance with building, fire, and zoning codes.
- Investigate complaints regarding safety hazards and code violations; enforce municipal ordinances related to zoning and property use.
- Issue notices of violation, citations, correction letters, and stop-work orders as required.
- Patrol the City to monitor non-permitted construction and identify code violations.
- Coordinate enforcement activities with outside agencies, businesses, attorneys, and inspectors.
- Maintain accurate records of inspections, permits, licenses, and enforcement actions; perform data entry and update computer systems.
- Provide public education on code compliance and available resources.
- Prepare depositions and provide testimony for administrative or criminal cases.
- Deliver excellent customer service and maintain professionalism during interactions with the public.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
- High school diploma or GED equivalent.
- Ability to obtain Code Enforcement Officer Certification within one (1) year of hire.
- Valid driver’s license and clean record required; Texas driver’s license within 3 months if out-of-state.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Associate’s degree or higher in Environmental Science/Studies, Biology, or a related field.
- Code Enforcement Officer Certification at time of hire.
- Two (2) years of experience in code enforcement or a related field.
- Familiarity with municipal codes, zoning, and property maintenance regulations.
- Bilingual skills (English/Spanish).

PHYSICAL DEMANDS
This position requires lifting up to 50 pounds occasionally. Frequent activities include driving, standing, sitting, walking, vision, hearing, and talking. Occasional activities include lifting, carrying, pushing/pulling, kneeling, bending, climbing, balancing, and twisting.
WORK ENVIRONMENT
Work involves exposure to variable and extreme weather conditions, construction hazards, heavy machinery, hazardous chemicals, infectious diseases, biological hazards, and potentially irate individuals. This is a safety-sensitive role.
